Meet Rudrojas Kunvar: A 16-Year-Old Indian-Origin Entrepreneur in the US Who Rejected a $300,000 Offer

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rudrojas Kunvar, a 16-year-old entrepreneur of Indian descent, recently faced a challenging decision regarding a $300,000 offer that could have altered the course of his education and career. While speaking with Business Insider, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity but emphasized his commitment to his mission over monetary gain. Kunvar developed an artificial intelligence tool aimed at assisting farmers in assessing crop health and was reluctant to let his creation become inaccessible to those it was designed to help. A venture capitalist had proposed that he forgo high school to dedicate himself to his AI startup full-time, but Kunvar remained determined to keep the platform free for users.

Innovative Approach to Agriculture

Kunvar’s innovative platform, Evion, leverages artificial intelligence to analyze crop health through images. He has teamed up with Jacob Lee, an 18-year-old, to enhance the tool’s reach and effectiveness. The technology allows farmers to upload pictures taken with basic cameras, including inexpensive drone cameras, to evaluate the well-being of their crops. According to Kunvar, many farmers are often left guessing about the health of their plants, which sparked his drive to create a solution through technology.

Inspiration Behind Evion

The inspiration for Kunvar’s venture originated during a community festival in Montgomery County, where he engaged with local farmers. He was surprised to learn that many farmers did not have the tools to effectively determine the health of their crops, largely relying on guesswork. His discussions revealed a widespread issue within the agricultural sector, particularly in the context of advancements in artificial intelligence not adequately meeting the needs of farmers.

Evolution of the Project

Initially, Kunvar envisioned developing a fleet of fully autonomous drones to aid in agricultural assessments. However, upon further research, he recognized that the primary hurdle was the expense associated with high-quality cameras used in such drones. This realisation led him to pivot his approach, focusing on how to achieve similar agricultural insights with more accessible technology. Evion utilizes AI algorithms to analyze photos based on the color and reflectivity of plants, generating a color-coded crop health map that indicates varying levels of plant vitality.

Impact and Reach

Since its inception, Evion has made significant strides in addressing agricultural challenges. The platform has garnered the attention of over 2,000 farmers across both Asia and the United States. With green indicating healthy crops, orange showcasing moderate health, and red signaling stress, the tool offers farmers a practical solution to monitor their crops more effectively. Kunvar’s efforts reflect a commitment to providing accessible technology that empowers farmers with the information necessary to make informed agricultural decisions.
