West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticised Delhi Police for labelling Bengali as a ‘Bangladeshi‘ language. She also called the Government of India “anti-Bengali” in a strongly worded social media post urging the people to protest against the Indian govt.
Taking to social media platform X, she wrote, “The Delhi Police under the Union Home Ministry is calling Bengali a Bangladeshi language! The language in which the National Anthem and National Song (Vande Mataram) are written, has been labelled as a Bangladeshi language.”
“This is Scandalous, insulting, anti- national, unconstitutional,” she further wrote calling the gesture an insult to all Bengali-speaking people of India.
Calling for a protest, she wrote, “We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali- speaking people of India.”
Delhi Police officer’s letter calling Bengali as “Bangladeshi” langugae
Delhi Police have arrested 8 people in Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. The police have written to Banga Bhawan seeking a translator to translate the documents recovered from the arrested. The Delhi Police has written in the letter that it is written in ‘Bangladeshi’ language.
Mamata Banerjee shared a letter written by the Investigating Officer of Delhi’s Lodhi Colony Police Station to the Officer-in-Charge of Banga Bhawan. The letter reads:
“During the course of investigation, 8 persons strongly suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India without any valid passport or visa were arrested. Upon enquiry, copies of national ID cards birth certificate bank account details etc. were found from these suspected Bangladeshi nationals. The suspected Bangladeshi nationals for arrested and remanded to judicial custody on the order of the honourable Court concerned.
The identification documents content text written in Bangladeshi and are needed to be translated to Hindi and English. Now for the investigation to proceed further, it is requested that an official translator or interpreter proficient in Bangladesh national language may kindly be provided for the aforesaid purpose.”
Mamata reacts
Reacting to the letter, the Chief Minister wrote: “Bengali, our mother tongue, the language of Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekananda, the language in which our National Anthem and the National Song (the latter by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay) are written, the language in which crores of Indians speak and write, the language which is sanctified and recognised by the Constitution of India, is now described as a Bangladeshi language!!
Scandalous, insulting, anti- national, unconstitutional!! This insults all Bengali-speaking people of India. They cannot use this kind of language which degrades and debases us all.
We urge immediate strongest possible protests from all against the anti-Bengali Government of India who are using such anti-Constitutional language to insult and humiliate the Bengali- speaking people of India.”
Mamata alleges Bengali migrant workers are being harassed in BJP-ruled states
Mamata Banerjee posted this video on Sunday, alleging that not only migrant workers but also their children are being tortured in the BJP-ruled states of India. Sharing a video from Delhi, Mamata Banerjee wrote, “Devastating terrorism. Look, how the Delhi Police brutally killed a child and mother of a migrant family from Chanchal, Malda. Look, not even a child is spared in the BJP’s language terrorism against Bengalis! Where are they taking the country?”
However, in response to the Chief Minister’s claim, the Delhi Police claimed that they investigated the claim and found that the claim made in the video is completely false. The video was created intentionally.
