Mahindra Unveils XUV 3XO CNG: A Cost-Effective Sub-4-Metre SUV

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG has been introduced as a cost-effective sub-4-metre SUV, maintaining a design similar to its petrol variant. The top model, known as the REVX A, showcases a body-coloured grille adorned with chrome slats and a dual-tone colour scheme. The CNG version is also available in lower trims such as the MX Edge, REVX Edge (O), and AX5.

Visual distinctions between the petrol and CNG variants are minimal, with the only notable feature being the ZNG badge at the rear, indicating its CNG functionality. The overall aesthetic remains appealing, ensuring that the CNG version does not compromise on style.

In terms of practicality, the boot space is reduced to 270 litres due to the inclusion of twin-cylinder CNG tanks, which have a capacity of 60 litres. This represents a loss of 94 litres compared to the petrol variant, yet the space is adequate for weekend trips for two to three individuals.

Interior Features and Comfort

The interior of the XUV 3XO CNG mirrors that of the petrol model, featuring a black-and-beige theme. Central to the cabin is a 10.25-inch infotainment screen alongside a similarly sized driver’s display, which conveniently tracks CNG fuel efficiency. This allows drivers to monitor their driving habits in real time.

Daily driving in the CNG variant is designed to be comfortable, equipped with features such as a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leatherette seats. Additionally, it includes a 65W fast charger, automatic headlamps, and wipers. However, it lacks Level 2 ADAS and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, which are found in the petrol variant.

Despite these minor omissions, the CNG version retains most of the features present in the petrol model, ensuring that users do not have to sacrifice comfort for lower running costs.

Driving Experience of the XUV 3XO CNG

The driving experience of the XUV 3XO CNG is noteworthy, as it offers performance comparable to its petrol counterpart. Traditionally, CNG vehicles tend to have reduced power, but Mahindra has ensured that the CNG version produces the same power and torque as the petrol model. The vehicle is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFi petrol engine, generating 114.5 bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque.

This engine is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, similar to the petrol variant. The CNG version does not compromise on performance, offering a seamless transition between CNG and petrol modes. The claimed efficiency stands at 24.70 km/kg, making it an economical choice for an SUV.

While some vibrations may be felt during start-up, the overall driving experience is smooth once the vehicle is in motion. The suspension setup, featuring MacPherson struts at the front and a semi-independent twist-beam at the rear, provides a balance between comfort and handling.

Overall, the XUV 3XO CNG is designed to deliver a satisfying driving experience without sacrificing performance or comfort, making it a compelling option in the compact SUV segment.
