LPG Shortage Uncovered as Black Market Thrives in Uttar Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing LPG supply crisis in Uttar Pradesh has uncovered a significant black market operation, particularly highlighted by a recent raid in Banda district. On a single day, officials discovered that over 700 cylinders had gone missing, despite official records indicating sufficient stock levels. Residents have faced increasing hardship, waiting for hours at gas agencies only to find them empty. Many reported making daily trips for refills, often returning without gas. One frustrated consumer expressed their plight, stating that gas was being sold at inflated prices elsewhere.

Discrepancies Identified During Surprise Inspections

The inspections were initiated following multiple complaints and were led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Naman Mehta under the direction of the District Magistrate. The team conducted surprise visits to various gas agencies, hotels, and restaurants. The findings revealed a stark contrast between recorded inventories and actual stock. For example, one agency reported having 916 domestic cylinders in its system but only presented 310 during the inspection. Additionally, 115 commercial cylinders were listed, yet not a single one was available at the time of the check. These discrepancies indicate potential diversion and illegal sale of over 700 cylinders within just 24 hours.

Improper Use of Domestic Cylinders for Commercial Purposes

Further inspections revealed troubling practices, including the misuse of domestic LPG cylinders by hotels, exacerbating the shortage faced by households. SDM Naman Mehta explained that the operational data displayed on the governmental portal did not align with the existing inventory accessible on-site. This misuse has contributed to the difficulties everyday consumers have faced during the ongoing crisis.

Legal Actions Initiated Following Findings

In response to the irregularities uncovered during the inspection, local authorities filed First Information Reports (FIRs) related to both the missing cylinders and the unauthorized use of domestic LPG for commercial purposes. A comprehensive report has been created detailing these findings, and further legal actions are anticipated. Officials have reiterated their commitment to enforcing strict measures against such practices moving forward.

Contextual Background on LPG Supply Issues

This latest LPG crisis emerges amid growing concerns regarding supply levels influenced by global tensions, including the ongoing conflict in Iran and Israel. While government officials assert that the supply chain remains robust, the realities experienced by consumers on the ground paint a different picture. The situation is leaving many households struggling to access essential resources.
