Livspace Lays Off 1,000 Employees Amid AI Transition in Bengaluru

The CSR Journal Magazine

Livspace, a startup based in Bengaluru specialising in home decor, has announced the dismissal of 1,000 employees as part of its transition towards adopting artificial intelligence. This layoff represents approximately 12 percent of the company’s total workforce. Backed by global investment firm KKR, Livspace is undergoing a significant reorganization aimed at reducing costs while enhancing its focus on AI-driven operations. This shift aligns with broader discussions at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where leaders are evaluating the implications of AI for employment across various sectors.

Leadership Changes Amid Restructuring

As the company reorganizes, co-founder Saurabh Jain has departed after an 11-year career with Livspace. Jain joined the firm following the acquisition of his startup, DezignUp, in 2015 and was promoted to chief business officer in 2022. His exit adds to the changes within the organization as Livspace pivots towards new operational models driven by artificial intelligence.

Industry-Wide AI Adoption and Layoffs

The move to automate processes reflects a broader trend in the industry, where major companies are increasingly integrating AI into their operations. Livspace’s spokesperson highlighted the company’s ambition to evolve into an “AI-native agentic organization” in striving for higher productivity. However, the spokesperson clarified that the layoffs are not merely a cost-cutting measure but a strategic reallocation of resources to align with the new business direction.

Impact on the Employment Landscape

The past few months have seen a challenging environment in the job market, with significant layoffs reported by numerous major companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Tata Consultancy Services, and Accenture, resulting in the loss of over 100,000 jobs in total. Livspace joins this roster of firms adjusting their workforce in light of growing AI adoption.

Automation of Core Functions

Livspace has made significant strides in automating key functions within its operations. Several tasks that were traditionally performed manually are now being executed by sophisticated AI systems. According to the company, advanced AI agents have been integrated across various departments such as Sales, Operations, Design, and Marketing, further enhancing efficiency in these areas.

Historical Context of Workforce Reductions

This is not the first instance of workforce reduction at Livspace. Earlier in 2023, the company eliminated nearly 100 jobs, while a prior restructuring in 2020 led to the termination of over 400 roles. These workforce adjustments are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency and profitability.

Financial Performance Overview

In terms of financial performance, Livspace reported a 23 percent increase in revenue, amounting to Rs 1,460 crore for the fiscal year 2025. The firm also noted a reduction in losses, which narrowed to Rs 242 crore, a significant improvement from losses of Rs 416 crore in the previous year. These financial metrics indicate a cautious yet positive trend for the company’s future amid the ongoing transformation.
