Lakshya Sen Opens All England Championships with Victory Over Shi Yu Qi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Lakshya Sen made a strong statement at the All England Championships by defeating top-ranked defending champion Shi Yu Qi in a thrilling Round of 32 match. The 12th-ranked Indian player displayed exceptional composure and tactical awareness, winning the encounter with scores of 23-21, 19-21, and 21-17. This victory is particularly notable as it marks only Sen’s second career win against Shi, the first being during the 2022 Asian Games team event.

A Tense Opening Game

The first game was marked by intense competition, culminating in a pivotal moment during a 35-shot rally at game point. Both players showcased patience, exchanging safe returns instead of risking aggressive plays. Sen ultimately secured the crucial point, taking the first game 23-21 after a series of closely contested exchanges that forced multiple deuces.

Shi’s Resurgence in the Second Game

In the second game, Shi Yu Qi responded with increased movement and precision. Sen initially led 8-6, but Shi quickly shifted into a higher gear, scoring five rapid points to gain an 11-8 advantage. After a brief interlude at 13-10, Shi’s frontcourt performance became dominant, pushing Sen into long rallies that tested his stamina. While Lakshya adapted his strategy, juggling between deep shots and clever drops, Shi’s ability to switch from defense to attack ultimately allowed him to claim the second game 21-19, forcing a decisive third game.

A Battle of Endurance in the Decider

The third game transformed into a true test of endurance, with Sen carving out a crucial lead at the mid-game interval. As Shi began to make unforced errors, Sen seized the moment to establish a two-point cushion. Shi fought back with powerful smashes; however, Sen’s intelligent net play ensured he retained control of the match. Tension escalated towards the closing moments as Sen struggled momentarily with his baseline shots, but he maintained composure, while Shi visibly battled nerves.

Next Challenge for Sen

Ultimately, Sen’s resolve proved stronger, enabling him to secure the victory and avenge his earlier defeat at the Paris World Championships. Lakshya Sen will next face Hong Kong’s Ka Long Angus Ng in the Round of 16, as he aims to continue his strong performance in the tournament.
