KTR Alerts Business Sector on LPG Supply Crisis, Urges Minister for Immediate Action

The CSR Journal Magazine

KT Rama Rao, the Working President of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), has reached out to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, highlighting a critical shortage of both commercial and domestic LPG cylinders. In his correspondence, KTR emphasized the dire situation impacting various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, hostels, and small food businesses. He warned that without immediate resolution, thousands of establishments may face closure and millions of workers and students could endure severe financial difficulties.

Proposal of Practical Solutions to Mitigate Crisis

In his letter, KTR proposed several actionable measures aimed at alleviating the ongoing crisis. These include establishing a tiered LPG allocation system designed to support small vendors, creating a real-time public dashboard to monitor LPG availability, and implementing a temporary price freeze on commercial cylinders. Furthermore, he called for stringent actions against black market operations and emphasized the need for special protection for essential services and vulnerable demographics such as PG hostels, crematoriums, and daily-wage workers.

Background and Government Response

The current shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has been attributed to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which prompted the government to invoke the Essential Commodities Act to prioritize domestic consumption. In response to the situation, the Enforcement wing of the CAF & Civil Supplies Department in Telangana is actively conducting searches and seizures to tackle illegal diversion and pilferage of domestic LPG cylinders. Meanwhile, domestic LPG production has reportedly increased by approximately 25%, with all production directed towards household consumers, as stated by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Minister Puri’s Involvement and Ongoing Monitoring Efforts

The Home Affairs Ministry has also bolstered its control room, which operates continuously to manage the situation effectively. Union Minister Hardeep Puri is expected to address these issues in Parliament soon, indicating a high-level acknowledgment of the emergency impacting various sectors due to the LPG supply crisis.
