Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar recently opened up about a formative experience from his early career, working as a costume assistant during the production of the legendary film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) in 1995. Johar began his journey under the guidance of Aditya Chopra, assisting in managing the costumes for one of Bollywood’s most iconic films.

His role involved coordinating with Manish Malhotra, the designer, and Pamela Chopra, who oversaw certain aspects of costume management, making the process both collaborative and challenging.

Reflecting on those days, Johar emphasized how intense and meticulous the film set was, even for someone starting out. Each scene required detailed planning, and the “Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna” sequence posed unique challenges that tested his creativity and problem-solving skills at the very start of his career.

The Tense Encounter With Saroj Khan

Johar recounted a particularly memorable incident involving the legendary choreographer Saroj Khan. During the song shoot, Khan requested additional red scarves for the dancers. Unfortunately, the production team had none readily available. Johar, trying to offer a practical solution, suggested an alternative to Khan’s assistant. The response was not what he expected.

Saroj Khan reportedly became assertive, insisting on immediate action. As Johar vividly remembered, she said: “Go wherever you have to. Go to Goregaon, bring the red cloth, or I will not shoot.”

Terrified yet determined to keep the shoot on schedule, Johar and the costume assistant rushed through the streets of Goregaon to find the required red satin fabric. The incident, though stressful at the time, left a lasting impression on Johar and taught him valuable lessons in resourcefulness and quick thinking under pressure.

Respect and Admiration for a Legend

Despite the fear and intensity of that moment, Johar expressed immense respect for Saroj Khan. He described her as “scary but the best” and acknowledged that her uncompromising approach stemmed from her dedication to perfection. He admitted that Khan did not take a liking to him during that time, but he recognized her brilliance and the invaluable learning opportunities she provided.

Johar reflected on how such experiences shaped his understanding of discipline, precision, and creativity, qualities that would later define his own career as a filmmaker. He emphasized that working with legends like Khan offered insights into the commitment required to create cinematic magic, and how early challenges prepare you for greater responsibilities in the industry.
