The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut expressed her dissatisfaction with the slow utilisation of funds allocated under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) during a recent District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting. This meeting took place in her constituency of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on Saturday.

In a video that circulated widely on social media, Ranaut highlighted that approximately Rs 11 crore was available in her MP fund, yet only around Rs 50 lakh had been spent to date. She conveyed her frustration by stating, “Don’t give me these useless jumlas,” referring to what she described as empty promises made by officials at previous meetings.

During the discussion, Ranaut challenged Block Development Officers (BDO) regarding the delays in expenditure and demanded a detailed report on the fund usage. She indicated that when she inquired about the MPLADS funds in previous DISHA Committee meetings, officials assured her that there were “absolutely no hiccups” and that almost 90 per cent of the funds had been exhausted. Ranaut noted that this assertion contradicted the actual figures she was witnessing.

Concerns Over Fraudulent Distribution of Funds

Ranaut raised serious concerns about reported findings from various agencies alleging that 30-40 per cent of MPLADS funds had been misallocated to fraudulent recipients. She questioned the capability of officials to recover these misappropriated funds and emphasised the need for accountability.

The actor-politician also mentioned that she had faced ridicule in the national media regarding her performance as an MP. She dismissed the officials’ competency by stating, “The officials are even better at acting than me,” implying that their efforts were insufficient in addressing the issues at hand.

During the meeting, Ranaut’s remarks included strong language, showcasing her palpable frustration with the officials. She pointed out the lack of progress on significant development projects, critiquing officials for seemingly ignoring the pressing needs of the Mandi constituency.

Directive for Accelerated Development Works

In light of her concerns, Ranaut instructed officials to prioritise and expedite all pending development projects in Mandi. She underscored the importance of ensuring that the MPLADS funds currently available are effectively utilised for the intended development of the region.

The BJP MP’s direct engagement with the officials highlights the urgent need for transparency and efficiency in fund management. Ranaut’s vocal stance aims to facilitate real changes in her constituency, addressing longstanding developmental issues that impact the local community.

Ranaut’s actions reflect a growing awareness and involvement from elected representatives in scrutinising local administrative processes. As the meeting concluded, her expectation for prompt action by officials signalled her determination to drive improvement within the framework of her political responsibilities.
