The project is spearheaded by a team at Kyoto University, with Seiji Kumagai from the Institute for the Future of Human Society leading the initiative. Unlike basic virtual assistants, Buddharoid is specifically designed to operate within temple environments. Its capabilities include speaking, moving, gesturing, and adopting traditional prayer postures. The aesthetic design prioritizes functionality over individual distinctiveness; dressed in grey robes and intentionally lacking individual facial features, Buddharoid encourages participants to focus on its spoken guidance rather than its appearance.

During a recent demonstration at a temple, Buddharoid interacted with attendees, walking among them and engaging in one-on-one conversations. Observers noted its ability to provide responses to questions regarding fundamental concepts of life, suffering, and morality, which are central to Buddhist teachings. The creators of Buddharoid emphasize that the aim of this initiative is not to replace human priests.
