Jantar Mantar Protesters Demand Economic Basis For Reservation, Repeal Of SC/ST Act

The CSR Journal Magazine

Members of an upper-caste group and several youths staged a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday, demanding changes to the reservation system and related provisions. The protesters called for reservation to be determined by economic status rather than caste.

The demonstrators also opposed the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and sought its repeal, alleging that such laws can be misused against individuals. The Delhi Police deployed a large security contingent and installed barricades around the protest site and nearby areas as the demonstration continued peacefully.

Protesters Call For Economic Basis For Reservation

Protesters raised slogans against the government and argued that economically weaker people should receive opportunities based on their financial circumstances, irrespective of caste.

Among the slogans raised at the demonstration was, “Reservation for the poor, not for caste”. The protesters said the reservation system should focus on economic disadvantage rather than caste-based classifications.

The group urged the government to review the existing provisions and take steps to address what it described as concerns over the current reservation framework.

Demand For Repeal Of SC/ST Act

The protesters also targeted the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, calling for the legislation to be repealed.

They alleged that provisions of the law could be misused against individuals and said safeguards were needed to prevent such misuse. The demonstrators urged the government to consider their concerns and take necessary action.

The protesters said they would continue to press their demands and warned that the agitation could be expanded in the coming days if they did not see positive action from the government.

Security Tightened At Jantar Mantar

The demonstration led the Delhi Police to make extensive security arrangements at Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas. A large number of personnel were deployed to monitor the gathering and maintain law and order.

Barricades were placed at several locations to regulate the movement of protesters and ensure security around the demonstration site.

Police remained present throughout the protest and monitored the situation. The demonstration continued peacefully amid the security arrangements.
