Israel has summoned the Spanish Embassy’s charge d’affaires following controversial statements made by Spain’s Youth Minister Sira Rego. The minister publicly backed the establishment of a Palestinian state, reportedly using the phrase “from the river to the sea.” This slogan is interpreted by many as a call for the eradication of the Israeli state.

It led to heightened diplomatic tension between the two nations. The Israeli Foreign Ministry commented that Rego’s statements form part of a broader “systematic anti-Israel policy” allegedly perpetuated by the Spanish government and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The ministry specifically noted Rego’s failure to denounce the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which catalysed the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

In a notable incident from September 2025, Rego was administratively prohibited from entering Israel, a measure that indicates the seriousness with which Israel views her comments and actions concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Diplomatic Row with the Netherlands

In addition to the situation with Spain, Israel is embroiled in a separate diplomatic conflict with the Netherlands. The Israeli government announced the expulsion of Dutch diplomats from Ramallah following recent decisions made by Dutch authorities. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen expressed regret over what he termed an “unnecessary decision” by Israel, emphasising the diplomatic strain this development creates.

This expulsion is reportedly linked to a ban instituted by the Netherlands on September 22 concerning the “import, purchase, and sale of goods” originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israeli authorities view this measure as directly antagonistic, contributing to the escalating tensions between the two nations.

The Netherlands, alongside a significant portion of the international community, classifies these settlement goods as illegal under international law. The Dutch government contends that the temporary import ban is not intended to target Israel, but is a reflection of its legal obligations to avoid contributing to what it considers an unlawful situation.

Two Separate Diplomatic Disputes for Israel

These unfolding events illustrate distinct diplomatic disputes faced by Israel regarding comments from a Spanish minister and the recent Dutch trade restrictions.
