A tragic case of love turned fatal has emerged from Kanpur, where a man murdered his 20-year-old live-in partner after suspecting her of infidelity. The couple had met on Instagram. Both had been living together in a rented home in Hanumant Vihar before the grisly incident occurred on July 21.

According to police, the accused, 23-year-old electrician Suraj Kumar Uttam, got into a heated argument with the victim, Aakanksha, after learning she had been speaking to another man. In a fit of rage, he reportedly slammed her head against a wall and then strangled her to death.

Selfie With the Body Led to Breakthrough

After committing the murder, Suraj called his friend, Ashish Kumar, for help in disposing of the body. The duo placed Aakanksha’s remains in a bag and set off on a motorcycle towards Banda, approximately 100 kilometers away, with plans to dump the body into the Yamuna River.

In a chilling turn of events, Suraj paused mid-journey to take a selfie with the bag containing her body. This disturbing image was later recovered from his mobile phone and proved to be a crucial piece of evidence in cracking the case.

Missing Complaint Unraveled the Crime

The murder came to light when Aakanksha’s mother filed a missing person complaint on August 8, accusing Suraj of kidnapping her daughter. During the investigation, police detained Suraj and Ashish. Initially, Suraj tried to mislead authorities but eventually confessed when confronted with his phone records and conversations with the victim.

Investigators revealed that Aakanksha previously lived with her sister in Kanpur’s Barra area and worked at a local restaurant. Her relationship with Suraj began online before transitioning to in-person meetings at the restaurant. The couple later moved in together.

Both Suraj and Ashish have been arrested and remain in judicial custody. Police continue to investigate the sequence of events that led to the murder.
