India’s Gross GST Collections Increase 14.7% to Rs 2.04 Lakh Crore in September

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 14.7 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2.04 lakh crore in September this year. This growth can be attributed to increased revenue from both domestic sources and imports, as detailed in the latest government data released on October 1.

The gross domestic GST revenue for September rose by 10.1 per cent, amounting to Rs 1.38 lakh crore, compared to Rs 1.25 lakh crore during the same month in the previous year. Additionally, revenue from imports increased substantially, with gross import revenue surging by 25.9 per cent to Rs 65,525 crore, up from Rs 52,031 crore in September 2025.

Integrated GST (IGST) collections, which incorporate revenues from both domestic transactions and imports, totalled Rs 1.20 lakh crore for September, an increase from Rs 1.02 lakh crore in the same month last year. Central GST (CGST) collections reached Rs 37,762 crore, while State GST (SGST) collections were reported at Rs 45,363 crore during this period.

Net GST Revenue and Refunds Analysis

After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue displayed an impressive year-on-year increase of 18.1 per cent, amounting to Rs 1.77 lakh crore in September 2026, compared to Rs 1.50 lakh crore during September 2025. The net domestic GST revenue saw a 13.5 per cent growth, reaching Rs 1.24 lakh crore, while customs-related GST net revenue increased by 30.8 per cent to Rs 52,028 crore this month.

Total GST refunds processed during September were recorded at Rs 27,001 crore, which is a 3 per cent decrease from Rs 27,848 crore in the previous year. Domestic refunds were particularly lower, declining by 13.5 per cent to Rs 13,504 crore. However, GST refunds related to exports through the ICEGATE system experienced a 10.2 per cent increase, amounting to Rs 13,497 crore.

For the six-month period spanning April to September in the current financial year, the gross GST collections have seen an increase of 11.6 per cent, totalling Rs 12.46 lakh crore compared to Rs 11.17 lakh crore during the same timeframe in 2025-26. The net GST revenue for the first six months of the fiscal year stood at Rs 10.66 lakh crore, marking a 10.4 per cent rise over the Rs 9.65 lakh crore recorded in the previous year.

State-wise GST Revenue Performance

State-level data highlights significant contributions to GST collections. Maharashtra recorded the highest GST revenue at Rs 29,986 crore in September, showing a year-on-year growth of 15 per cent. Karnataka followed with a revenue of Rs 13,884 crore, which is a 16 per cent increase. Gujarat’s revenue reached Rs 12,222 crore, exhibiting a growth rate of 17 per cent.

Other notable performances include Uttar Pradesh and Telangana, both of which experienced an 18 per cent growth in GST revenue. Uttar Pradesh’s collections amounted to Rs 8,882 crore, while Telangana’s revenue reached Rs 5,327 crore, underscoring the positive trend in tax collections across various states.

The overall figures indicate a robust and increasing trend in GST collections, reflecting ongoing strengths in economic activity and compliance within the tax system.
