Indian Railways Achieves Notable Growth in FY 2025-26, Freight and Passenger Milestones Achieved

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways has seen remarkable growth in the fiscal year 2025-26, showcasing a comprehensive advancement in freight and passenger services. The organisation reported record levels in freight operations, ensuring significant connectivity enhancements across the nation.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted this progress on social media, emphasising the impressive performance in both freight and passenger sectors. In addition to enhanced safety measures, new services, including Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, were also launched to improve travel experiences.

The year saw an impressive average of nearly 25,000 trains operating daily, facilitating widespread connectivity. Special train services were introduced during peak demand, significantly increasing travel accessibility for passengers throughout the country.

Record Freight Transportation Figures

In a significant achievement, freight transportation reached an all-time high, with loading figures reaching 1,670 million tonnes during FY 2025-26. This impressive statistic illustrates the organisation’s ability to manage essential commodities such as coal, cement, fertilisers, and food grains effectively.

Further emphasising its commitment to domestic manufacturing, Indian Railways produced 1,674 locomotives as part of its ‘Make in India’ initiative. Ongoing modernisation efforts also included the manufacturing of 6,677 LHB coaches, aimed at enhancing passenger safety and comfort.

The expansion of Vande Bharat services marked a notable development in passenger travel, integrating new sleeper train options that complement the existing fleet. These advancements reflect a significant step towards modernising travel for long-distance journeys across the rail network.

Enhanced Safety and Digital Innovations

Safety measures became a strong focus with the expansion of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection System. This advanced safety mechanism is now installed over 3,100 route kilometres, with plans in place for its implementation on an additional 24,400 kilometres, enhancing operational safety across the network.

Digital transformation has played a crucial role in modernising services, exemplified by the introduction of the RailOne App in July 2025. This application provides passengers with a streamlined platform for ticket bookings, enquiries, and grievance resolution, aiming to improve user experience.

In a bid to ensure transparency, more than 3.04 crore suspicious user accounts were removed from the railway system, resulting in fairer access to services. This concerted effort aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to improving customer satisfaction through technology.

Infrastructure Development and Connectivity Improvements

Infrastructure projects also advanced significantly, featuring the commissioning of 35 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, designed to optimise logistics through effective multimodal integration. Additionally, the redevelopment of 119 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has enhanced amenities and overall passenger experience.

Key connectivity enhancements were made in strategic areas, including the Bairabi-Sairang rail line, which now connects Aizawl in the Northeast. This initiative strengthens the railway network in the region and underscores the organisation’s commitment to improving transport links nationwide.

Major bridge projects also contributed to reinforcing all-weather rail connectivity to Jammu & Kashmir, further supporting regional development. Indian Railways continues to focus on modernisation, capacity expansion, and inclusive growth, striving towards a more efficient and technology-driven rail system in line with the goals of a developed India.
