Indian Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth Honoured with General Rank in Nepali Army

General Dhiraj Seth, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army, has been awarded the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepali Army during a ceremonial event held at Rashtrapati Bhawan in Kathmandu on August 17. This prestigious recognition was conferred by Ram Chandra Paudel, the President of Nepal, as part of the special tradition that exists between the Indian and Nepali armed forces.

Official Visit Aimed at Strengthening Ties

During his three-day official trip from August 17 to 19, General Seth is focused on enhancing military cooperation between India and Nepal. On August 17, he was welcomed with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Nepali Army Headquarters in Kathmandu. Following this, he laid a wreath at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, underscoring the importance of his visit.

The Ministry of Defence indicated that General Seth’s itinerary includes several interactions with key military officials in Nepal. He is scheduled to meet with his Nepali counterpart and receive comprehensive briefings from the Director General of Military Operations regarding mutual strategic issues of interest.

The following day, on August 18, General Seth will address student officers participating in the Army Command and Staff Course in Shivapuri, where he will also engage with instructors and international student officers. Additionally, he is expected to hold discussions with senior Nepali dignitaries, further solidifying bilateral relations.

Final Engagements in Pokhara

The last day of General Seth’s visit, August 19, will see him travelling to Pokhara to participate in an Ex-Servicemen Rally. At this event, he will honour Veer Naris and individuals who have received gallantry awards, in addition to engaging with Indian Army veterans before his return to India.

The Ministry of Defence emphasised the value of this visit, noting the deep historical, social, and cultural ties that connect India and Nepal. These relationships, often referred to as the ‘Roti Beti Ka Rishta’, highlight the civilisational links between places such as Janakpur and Ayodhya, as well as Lumbini and Bodhgaya. Such shared values reinforce their partnership aimed at regional peace and stability.

This visit not only reinforces military collaboration but also opens new avenues for future cooperation between the two armies, underlining the enduring ties between the nations.

General Dhiraj Seth’s Career Overview

General Dhiraj Seth, who has earned several distinguished military accolades including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Ativishisht Seva Medal, began his career at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla upon his commissioning into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. His dedication and integrity have been instrumental to his rise within the military ranks, ultimately leading to his appointment as Chief of the Army Staff on June 30, 2026.

Over his four-decade career, General Seth has demonstrated exceptional leadership across various capacities, significantly contributing to the Indian Army’s operational effectiveness and transformation. His command experience includes leadership roles in both the Desert Sector and the Western Theatre, alongside his service in Jammu & Kashmir.

Moreover, General Seth has led the Sudarshan Chakra Corps and commanded both the South Western and Southern Commands, roles that are critical to the Indian Army’s structure. He also boasts extensive qualifications, having completed courses at the Higher Command Course, the National Defence College, and the prestigious Command & Staff Course in France.

Throughout his military journey, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the Indian Army’s strategic modernisation and capability restructuring, reaffirming the significance of his contributions in both defence and international relations.
