India Women’s Team Opens AFC Asian Cup Campaign Against Vietnam in Perth

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian senior women’s national football team is poised to start their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 journey with a match against Vietnam on Wednesday at the Perth Rectangular Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 16:30 IST, as confirmed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). This event marks a significant moment for the team, which has been on a challenging path over the past four years, including the withdrawal from the AFC Women’s Asian Cup India 2022. The team’s success in last year’s qualifiers has secured their place at the Asian Cup, marking a historic achievement as it is the first time India has qualified for this tournament based on their performance.

Coach’s Perspective

Amelia Valverde, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian women’s team, articulated a sense of optimism heading into the tournament. Reflecting on the past setbacks, Valverde stated, “That was four years ago. There are no coincidences in life, though, and we are back here again with a chance to prove ourselves.” She emphasized the importance of this moment for the team and the need to represent India earnestly in the competition.

FIFA World Cup Qualification Path

The Asian Cup provides a crucial opportunity for the participating teams, with the top four semi-finalists securing direct entry to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027. There are additional chances as two of the four losing quarter-finalists will compete for the remaining direct qualification spots from Asia, while the last two teams will enter the Play-off Tournament for another opportunity at qualification.

Preparation and Acclimatization

Ranked 67th in the FIFA Rankings, the Blue Tigresses have undergone extensive preparations, including a 52-day training camp across three continents. Valverde remarked on the team’s hard work and motivation, stating, “We have worked very hard in the last few weeks, and the motivation is high within the team to get the best possible result for India.” The camp began in Gurugram and later transitioned to Antalya, Turkiye, before arriving in Perth three weeks in advance for acclimatization.

Focus on the Opposition

In a pre-match press conference, Valverde acknowledged the strength of their opponents, Vietnam, who participated in the last World Cup. She highlighted Vietnam’s consistent performance under coach Mai Duc Chung, noting, “They are a team with a lot of quality… But our job is to exhibit the best version of the Indian team.” The squad is determined to demonstrate their competitive spirit on the pitch.

Captain’s Readiness

Captain Sweety Devi Ngangbam, who experienced the disappointment of 2022, echoed the sentiments of her coach regarding their preparations. She remarked, “We have prepared very well. The squad is ready, and we are fully focused on giving our best performance at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.” She expressed satisfaction with the decision to arrive in Perth early, as it allowed the team to adapt to local conditions ahead of the tournament.

Vietnam’s Approach

Meanwhile, Vietnam’s head coach Mai Duc Chung expressed cautious optimism for their match against India. He acknowledged that while they have prepared well, the competition will be formidable, stating, “We have had good preparation, but we will be facing strong teams. We have to try and match them.” He conveyed confidence in his squad’s readiness, indicating a resolve to showcase their capabilities in the forthcoming match.
