On April 8, the Ministry of External Affairs in India confirmed the shipment of 250 metric tons of foodgrains to Seychelles. This initiative is part of a larger Special Economic Package valued at USD 175 million, which aims to bolster the economic and developmental ties between the two nations. Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for the ministry, announced the consignment on social media, stating that this is just the beginning of further assistance under the committed package.

Details of the Special Economic Package

The Special Economic Package was unveiled during the Seychelles President Patrick Herminie’s visit to India from February 5 to February 10, when he was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the announcement, it was emphasized that the package would consist of a combination of financial assistance, including USD 125 million in a Rupee-denominated Line of Credit and USD 50 million allocated for grant assistance. These funds are intended to support various development cooperation projects, capacity building for both civilian and defense sectors, as well as initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security.

Commitment to Development and Security

During his visit, President Herminie recognized India’s ongoing contributions toward the development and security goals of Seychelles. India has been actively involved in providing lines of credit, grants, and undertaking significant community development projects. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed his commitment to being a reliable partner in Seychelles’ development agenda, highlighting the focus on sustainable growth, defense strategies, and capacity building.

Digital Transformation Initiatives

In addition to economic support, the two leaders discussed the importance of digital transformation for Seychelles. They acknowledged India’s rapid advancement in digital technologies and its potential benefits for the Global South. India pledged to support Seychelles in enhancing its digital governance, which would enhance service delivery for its citizens. This encompasses the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), including digital payment systems, tailored to meet Seychelles’ specific requirements.

Future Prospects of Bilateral Cooperation

The commitment to deepen the people-centric development partnership signifies an ongoing collaboration aimed at addressing mutual goals. With the Special Economic Package, both countries are signalling a shared vision to promote inclusive growth and maritime security, along with a focus on sustainability and resilience. This partnership highlights the strengthening ties between India and Seychelles as they navigate their respective developmental pathways.
