IMD Issues Red Alert as Excavation Work Causes Landslide on NH-707A in Tehri Garhwal

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent excavation work for a hotel has allegedly triggered a landslide on National Highway 707A in Tehri Garhwal. The incident took place near the shops at Kaddukhal on July 9, according to the Disaster Management Department of Tehri Garhwal. An old, empty structure sustained damage as a result of the slide.

Prior to the landslide, safety measures were enacted, leading to the evacuation of two nearby restaurants, roadside kiosks, and temporary shelters for labourers that were deemed at risk. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or injuries to livestock related to this incident.

Weather Warnings Issued for Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal

The Uttarakhand Meteorological Centre’s forecast has proven accurate, as heavy rainfall has been affecting Haridwar since the previous night, resulting in significant waterlogging in multiple locations. Among the worst-hit areas is Bhagat Singh Chowk, where rainwater accumulation beneath a railway bridge has led to serious public inconvenience.

Vehicles have become stranded in waterlogged streets, with a notable incident involving a bus carrying employees of the State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL), which broke down due to the flooding. Pedestrians are also experiencing considerable hardships navigating the affected areas.

In response to the severe weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for the next three hours. The alert predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of both Haridwar and Pauri Garhwal districts, including Laksar, Manglaur, Khanpur, Gumkhal, Dugadda, Kotdwar, and Devrana, among other adjacent regions.

Local Administration Takes Precautions Amid Heavy Rainfall

Continuous rainfall since late last night also impacted Dehradun and nearby areas, providing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat and humidity. In anticipation of adverse weather conditions, local authorities have declared a holiday for schools in the region.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and heed safety advisories. They are advised not to seek shelter under trees or other fragile structures and to stay updated on traffic conditions before embarking on any journeys. Local government officials are actively communicating necessary guidelines to ensure public safety.

The combination of excavation activities and heavy rains has led to increasing concerns among residents and authorities alike. Ongoing monitoring of the situation is critical as officials assess the impact of both the landslide and the rainfall. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to construction guidelines and disaster preparedness measures in hilly regions.
