IIT Kanpur Launches $1 Billion Fundraising Campaign by March 2029

The CSR Journal Magazine

IIT Kanpur has initiated a fundraising campaign named Greater Than Us, aiming to raise $1 billion by March 2029. This initiative is noted as the largest fundraising effort undertaken by any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). As of now, commitments amounting to ₹4,155 crore have been secured, which accounts for nearly half of the target. The campaign was officially launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 14 October.

The support for this campaign has come from a diverse group of alumni, donors, corporate partners, and government entities. The funds raised will be allocated towards enhancing research facilities, providing student support, and advancing technologies developed within India. The campaign is structured around three key areas: Foundation, Talent, and Frontier.

Key Initiatives and Funding Allocation

One significant commitment to the campaign comes from alumnus Rahul Gautam, who has pledged ₹180 crore for the establishment of a new school. This agreement was formalised during the campaign launch. The Gautam School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship is set to operate from the institute’s Noida campus and is expected to commence in July 2027. It will offer an MBA in Technology and Entrepreneurship, staffed by full-time faculty and featuring its own degree programmes.

The school aims to nurture founders in various fields, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital health, biotechnology, drones, and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, a proposed Deep Tech Hub will provide students with access to advanced facilities, while the school will collaborate with the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur, which has previously supported 571 startups.

The Foundation area of the campaign seeks to raise ₹5,000 crore specifically for research facilities and institutional growth. Plans include the establishment of a ₹524 crore Central Research Facility that will offer shared access to state-of-the-art equipment. Among the proposed facilities are a ₹160 crore semiconductor and device processing centre, as well as a ₹200 crore computing facility dedicated to artificial intelligence research and scientific simulations.

Student Support and Future Goals

The campaign also focuses on enhancing student life, with plans for four new student residences, each designed to accommodate 1,000 individuals. The first of these residences is anticipated to be completed by June 2027. Additionally, there are plans for 96 faculty apartments and a mental health and wellbeing centre to support the community.

The Talent segment of the campaign aims to raise ₹3,000 crore to benefit students, researchers, teachers, and entrepreneurs. This funding will be directed towards scholarships, doctoral fellowships, and initiatives designed to attract global teaching talent. IIT Kanpur aspires to provide financial assistance to every eligible student, and its student entrepreneurship programme will support founders in sectors such as defence, aerospace, healthcare, and clean technologies.

In the Frontier area, the campaign has already surpassed its funding target, securing ₹1,556 crore against an initial goal of ₹1,000 crore. This segment focuses on linking fundamental research with practical technological applications, with plans for centres dedicated to quantum technology and semiconductor packaging, as well as facilities for medical device development and testing. A drug discovery programme is also in the works, targeting cancer, metabolic disorders, and neurological diseases.

Director Manindra Agrawal has emphasised the necessity for India to develop technologies that will shape its future. He stated that every financial commitment made will support a specific school, facility, position, or programme, thus ensuring a clear and focused utilisation of the funds raised.
