IIT Bombay has organised an Open House today in response to ongoing student protests linked to the tragic suicide of second-year student Sahil Wakode. The event is set to take place at the Convocation Hall and follows three days of demonstrations on the Powai campus. Students presented an 18-point charter of demands in light of Wakode’s untimely death, urging the involvement of senior officials in addressing their concerns.

Wakode, who was pursuing a BTech in Energy Science and Engineering, died by suicide on September 18, reportedly just hours after being found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination. This incident has sparked considerable unrest among the student body, who have called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Student Demands and Administration’s Response

In the wake of the tragedy, students have expressed their concerns regarding the institute’s management of the situation and the events leading up to it. The 18-point charter submitted by students includes requests for an impartial inquiry into Wakode’s death, improvements to student grievance processes, and enhanced mental health support. They have also called for increased representation of students in institutional decision-making.

On the part of the administration, IIT Bombay has agreed to address the students’ demands and has confirmed the Open House session aimed at facilitating dialogue between students and officials. An email sent by the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs indicated the session is designed to allow the IIT Bombay community to pose questions and seek clarity on matters affecting students.

The Open House is set for 5 pm, where students are encouraged to submit any questions they wish to raise through an online form beforehand. The administration has implemented this system to ensure an organised and constructive discussion, focusing on relevant and respectful communication.

The administration has stated that queries submitted via the form will be collected and addressed in a moderated fashion during the Open House. Students are urged to keep their inquiries pertinent to the topics at hand. This structure is intended to facilitate a productive dialogue, allowing students to express their concerns while also receiving information regarding ongoing issues and the recently proposed 18-point charter.

The Open House will serve as a platform for students to clarify any queries concerning the administration’s oversight during the protests and the matters raised within the charter. The institute has also issued an apology for its previous communications related to the circumstances leading up to his suicide, acknowledging that these details remain under investigation.
