Hotel Association Urges Karnataka Government to Resume LPG Cylinder Supplies

The CSR Journal Magazine

Members of the Karnataka State Hotel Association have appealed to the state government for the resumption of commercial LPG cylinder supplies in Bengaluru. The association emphasized that the shortage could significantly impact the general public and lead to substantial financial losses for restaurants and eateries. A delegation from the association met with Karnataka Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh to discuss the pressing issue of the current shortfall in available commercial LPG cylinders.

Delegation Meets Chief Secretary

The Honorary President of the Hotel Association, P C Rao, expressed concerns that the ongoing restrictions in LPG supply would disrupt food services crucial for many people, including workers in various sectors. Rao highlighted the interdependencies of local businesses, noting that hotels would struggle to procure essential goods such as vegetables and dairy products if the gas supply was not restored. He stated, “Our requirement is 25 percent of consumption; 75 percent is domestic, and 25 percent is for commercial use. We have requested at least 12.5 percent of the supply. If I typically buy 50 cylinders per month, we ask for at least half of that, which is 25 cylinders. If the supply becomes zero, everything will collapse.”

Restaurants Warn of Operational Crisis

Rao further articulated the ramifications of the supply shortfall, stating that it could lead to a lack of food options for gig workers, metro staff, IT employees, and those in healthcare facilities. He mentioned the heavy financial burdens faced by hotels, such as high rents and employee salaries, along with their reliance on substantial quantities of fresh produce.

Request for Partial Supply Allocation

Subramanya Holla, the Association’s President and another member of the delegation, echoed Rao’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for the Chief Secretary to relay these issues to the Central government. He described the officials as “not very responsive” but stressed that even reallocating a small amount of domestic supply for commercial use could significantly alleviate their struggles. Holla remarked, “We have requested the Chief Secretary to advocate for a Karnataka representation to the Central government, asking that at least one and a half percent of the gas allocated for residential use be redirected to commercial establishments. This step could resolve at least 50 percent of our issues.”

West Asia Conflict Affecting Supply

The supply shortages of LPG have been attributed to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted global oil and natural gas shipping routes. In response to these challenges, the Union government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to prioritize domestic LPG supplies, reserving larger allocations for households, hospitals, and essential services, while limiting commercial distribution in various regions.

Government Monitoring Energy Supply

According to the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the overall supply of crude oil in India remains stable. Currently, India consumes approximately 5.5 million barrels of oil daily and has diversified its procurement methods to ensure supply levels exceed typical arrivals through the Strait of Hormuz during this period. The total consumption of natural gas in India reaches about 189 MMSCMD, with 97.5 MMSCMD produced locally. However, approximately 47.4 MMSCMD of the supply has been affected by force majeure conditions.

In addition to these measures, the Ministry of Home Affairs has established a control room with round-the-clock operations. This initiative includes nodal officers from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to facilitate accurate fact-checking and provide prompt clarifications to states and Union Territories amidst growing public anxiety regarding the availability of LPG.
