Bangladesh Requests Expedited Business Visas from India for Enhanced Economic Cooperation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bangladesh has formally requested India to accelerate the issuance of business visas for its nationals in order to foster a more robust economic partnership between the two countries. During a recent event in Dhaka, Shama Obaed Islam, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the significance of facilitating smoother business operations for Bangladeshi entrepreneurs seeking opportunities in India.

Islam articulated that an increased issuance of business visas would enable frequent travel for business professionals, thereby enhancing trade and investment relations. The State Minister emphasised that these practical steps are essential for creating a business-friendly environment that can benefit both nations.

She noted the need for improved communication between the private sectors of Bangladesh and India, advocating for a more dynamic exchange that would ultimately support economic growth in both countries.

Addressing Trade Imbalances and Barriers

While acknowledging the significant growth in bilateral trade over the years, Islam remarked that the current trade relationship remains unbalanced and does not fully exploit its potential. According to recent reports, Islam expressed concerns regarding various non-tariff barriers, including standards and testing challenges, procedural delays, and infrastructure issues that hinder efficient movement of goods and services.

During her speech, Islam addressed these challenges, suggesting that resolving these obstacles could pave the way for a more vibrant economic engagement. She asserted that enhanced predictability and ease of doing business could yield advantages for companies on both sides of the border.

Bangladesh’s goals include establishing an economic partnership with India that delivers mutual benefits and tangible improvements in the lives of people from both nations. Islam expressed confidence in the ability of business communities from both countries to collaborate effectively to identify and implement viable solutions to existing challenges.

Investment Opportunities and Economic Potential

Islam invited Indian investors to consider expanding their footprint in Bangladesh, citing the country’s vast domestic market and skilled industrial workforce. She underscored Bangladesh’s competitive production capabilities and its advantageous geographical proximity to regional markets as key factors that could attract Indian investments.

The Minister highlighted that the economic zones in Bangladesh offer unique opportunities for Indian companies to establish dedicated manufacturing and export facilities. She specifically welcomed investments that could integrate local suppliers and introduce new technology, ultimately contributing to job creation and connecting Bangladeshi products to wider value chains.

She encouraged Indian companies to increase sourcing from Bangladesh in sectors where the country already demonstrates competitive advantages, such as ready-made garments, textiles, jute products, pharmaceuticals, and various light engineering industries. This would not only enhance trade but would also foster a deeper economic connection between the two nations.

As of February 2025-26, total bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India stands at approximately USD 11.35 billion. Bangladesh remains India’s largest trading partner in South Asia, while India serves as one of the primary export destinations for Bangladeshi products. With India providing duty-free market access to almost all Bangladeshi goods under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement, the importance of fostering a more balanced economic relationship is increasingly evident.
