Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected BJP Legislature Leader, Set to Take Oath as Assam CM on May 12

The CSR Journal Magazine

Himanta Biswa Sarma will officially resume the role of Chief Minister of Assam after being elected as the head of the BJP Legislature Party. This decision follows a meeting of newly-elected NDA legislators held in Guwahati on May 10, 2026. Union Minister JP Nadda announced this pivotal decision, confirming Sarma’s leadership position within the NDA alliance in Assam.

During the meeting, eight proposals endorsing Sarma’s candidacy were presented by various prominent leaders within the party. Among these leaders were Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Biswajit Daimary, Ajanta Neog, Rameswar Teli, Rajdeep Roy, Ashok Singhal, Pijush Hazarika, and Chakradhar Gogoi. Their collective support was crucial in consolidating Sarma’s position as the leader of both legislative factions.

Support From NDA Constituents

The meeting saw considerable participation from legislators affiliated with the NDA constituents, comprising BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Prominent figures, including AGP’s Atul Bora and BPF’s Rihon Daimary, voiced their support for Sarma’s election, which facilitated his unanimous selection as the leader of both the BJP and the NDA alliance legislative parties.

Sarma’s election is indicative of the stable environment of support he has cultivated within the party ranks. The unanimous vote reflects an alignment of interests among various political entities within the NDA, demonstrating a shared commitment to governance and development in Assam. The consistency in leadership suggests a solid foundation for continued efforts in addressing the state’s challenges.

Future Plans and Ceremony Details

Himanta Sarma is set to take the oath of office on May 12, 2026, marking the commencement of his second consecutive term as Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the ceremony as the chief guest, highlighting the national importance of Sarma’s leadership. This event will serve as a significant occasion for both Sarma and the NDA, accentuating their electoral success.

The NDA secured a convincing mandate in the recent elections, winning a total of 102 out of the 126 seats available in the Assam Legislative Assembly. This victory placed them in a strong position, leaving the opposition with 75 seats. Within the NDA, the BJP emerged as the dominant party, securing 82 seats, while its allies, AGP and BPF, each obtained 10 seats. This successful coalition reflects the strategic partnerships that were formed ahead of the elections.

In contrast, the opposition faced a challenging electoral landscape, with the Congress-led alliance winning merely 19 seats. Other opposition parties, including Raijor Dal, managed to secure two seats, while Assam Jatiya Parishad did not win any, and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) also achieved two seats. This division within the opposition may influence the political dynamics in Assam moving forward, as the NDA aims to implement its policies and initiatives effectively.
