Government of India Grants Lifetime Free Rail Travel to Gallantry Award Recipients and Companions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has announced a scheme that enables recipients of gallantry awards to enjoy lifetime complimentary travel on Indian Railways. According to statements from defense officials, each awardee can also take one companion who will be afforded similar travel privileges. In cases where the award was given posthumously, the parents or spouse of the recipient can benefit from this initiative. However, the spouse can utilize the scheme until they remarry, while the parents can only avail themselves of the benefit if the awarded individual was unmarried at the time of their passing.

Eligibility Criteria for the Travel Scheme

Officials clarified that the order allows for complimentary travel in First Class, AC 2-tier, or AC chair car accommodations. This travel benefit extends to holders of the Sana, Nau Sena, and Vayu Sena Medals for gallantry. The initiative has been positively received, signifying the government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by defense personnel.

Framework of Cooperation between Indian Railways and the Army

In a related development, Indian Railways and the Army have established a “Framework of Cooperation” aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for Agniveers and serving Army personnel transitioning into civilian roles. This initiative is focused on facilitating a smooth transition to civilian careers, increasing awareness of job opportunities, and creating a supportive network for retiring service members. According to the Ministry of Railways, this collaboration seeks to ensure that military personnel find adequate job prospects post-service.

Job Reservations and Recruitment Initiative

Under the new framework, there is a provision for reserving 10% of Level-2 and above posts, as well as 20% of Level-1 positions, specifically for ex-servicemen. Additionally, 5% of Level-2 and above posts, along with 10% of Level-1 vacancies, are earmarked for retired Agniveers. It has been noted that for the years 2024 and 2025, a total of 14,788 positions have been allocated, which includes 6,485 at Level-1 and 8,303 at Level-2 and above. The recruitment for these posts is carried out through competitive exams coordinated by Railway Recruitment Cells and Railway Recruitment Boards.

Expedited Hiring Process for Ex-Servicemen

To accelerate the hiring process, ex-servicemen are being recruited for contract positions as Pointsmen. Over 5,000 Level-1 posts are reported to be currently in the processing phase. Additionally, nine Railway Divisions have signed memorandums of understanding with Army organizations to facilitate the hiring of eligible candidates. This initiative is seen as a strategic step towards integrating military personnel into civilian job markets, thereby acknowledging their contributions to the country.
