‘Save Me, They Will Kill Me’: Girl Texts Her Boyfriend Before Getting Killed For ‘Honour’ In Gujarat

The CSR Journal Magazine

A shocking incident has come to light from Dantia village in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district. Here, an 18-year-old girl identified as Chandrika Chaudhary, was allegedly murdered by her father and uncle. The incident is a suspected case of honour killing.

Furthermore, in a chilling discovery, Chandrika before her death on June 24, had sent a desperate message to her live-in partner, Haresh Chaudhary. Haresh told the police that he received a text from the victim that read, “Come and get me; otherwise, my family will get me married against my will. If I don’t agree to the marriage, they will kill me. Save me.”

Relationship and Resistance

According to reports, Chandrika was a NEET aspirant who had cleared the exam with good marks. Following which she had been in a live-in relationship with Haresh. The two had eloped to Ahmedabad in May and signed a formal live-in agreement.

However, on June 12, a police team from Tharad and a relative of the girl traced the couple down to a hotel in Rajasthan. The girl was brought back to her home. Haresh, arrested in an unrelated case, was in jail. During this period Chandrika sent him messages expressing fear for her life. While he was in jail he saw two messages from the victim on Instagram. She texted him on June 17 and expressed that she will be killed.

After reading the message, he contacted a lawyer, who filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking that the girl be produced before the court. However, on June 25, two days before the hearing, Chaudhary learnt that she had died on the night of June 24 and her last rites were also performed the next morning.

Planned Murder, Disguised as Natural Death

The police informed, that the girl was taken to her uncle Shivrambhai Patel’s house, where she was given milk laced with sleeping pills. Once unconscious, she was strangled by her father Sendhabhai Patel and uncle. Following the murder her death was then staged to appear natural. Her body was then cremated the next morning. No doctor was consulted, and even her brother was not informed about her death. This raised serious suspicions over Chandrika’s sudden death.

Investigation and Arrests

However the incident came to light after her partner filed a complaint. A habeas corpus petition was filed in the Gujarat High Court and the police launched an investigation. Based on circumstantial evidence and technical analysis, the death was confirmed as a planned murder.

Her uncle and a co-accused have been arrested, while her father remains on the run. Police say the motive was to prevent Chandrika from continuing her relationship with Haresh.
