Ex-Gujarat CM Vaghela Faces Heat Over Rs 50,000 Waste Collection Offer to Upper Castes

The CSR Journal Magazine

The former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shankersinh Vaghela, has ignited significant political controversy with his recent comments aimed at the Patel, Baniya, and Brahmin communities over their opposition to affirmative action in the form of reservations. Speaking to a gathering of tribal farmers in the Narmada district on Friday, Vaghela announced his willingness to pay members of these communities Rs 50,000 each month to engage in waste collection. This statement has attracted intense criticism from community leaders and political adversaries.

Vaghela made these remarks while addressing a farmers’ conference held in Khopi, located in the Sagbara area, which was focused on the rights of tribal farmers to cultivate forest land. Prominent figures such as Amit Chavda, the Gujarat Congress president, and other Congress leaders were also in attendance. During his address, Vaghela advocated for the continuation and support of reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, asserting that these measures should not be perceived as mere concessions.

Emphasising the historical struggles faced by disadvantaged communities, Vaghela critiqued those who oppose the reservation system. He stated, “Reservation has not been given to anyone as a favour. Those who benefit from it have endured lifelong suffering and discrimination.” He challenged members of the Patel, Baniya, and Brahmin communities to reflect on their opposition to reservation policies, purportedly inviting them to engage in manual scavenging as a test of their commitment to the issue.

Reactions and Criticism from Political Rivals

The remarks made by Vaghela have quickly drawn condemnation from leaders representing the affected communities. Yagnesh Dave, a BJP leader with links to the Brahmin community, accused Vaghela of singling out specific groups without justification. He went further by challenging Vaghela to undertake the work himself, suggesting, “Shankersinh Bapu should first begin this noble task at his own home.” Dave expressed his willingness to compensate Vaghela substantially for any efforts he might make.

Additionally, Alpesh Kathiriya, a leader associated with the Patidar community, has insisted that Vaghela issue an unconditional apology. He expressed discontent regarding Vaghela’s comments, especially when articulated in a public setting, arguing that such statements could exacerbate tensions among various communities in Gujarat.

These responses highlight the polarized nature of the current political discourse in Gujarat, as groups react to Vaghela’s provocative statements with calls for accountability and reconciliatory actions. The significance of Vaghela’s comments extends beyond individual grievances, touching on broader issues of social justice and community relations.

Vaghela’s Potential Return to Congress and Political Dynamics

The controversy surrounding Vaghela’s statements occurs during a critical phase in his political journey. Presently, there are discussions about his potential return to the Congress party, nearly nine years after his departure. Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda has acknowledged these negotiations between Vaghela and the party’s high command, although re-entry is contingent upon approval from senior leadership.

Vaghela initially left the Congress in 2017 due to differences with party management, following which he formed the Janvikalp Morcha and contested the Gujarat Assembly elections. He then briefly affiliated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) before founding the Praja Shakti Democratic Party in 2024. His current activities and recent public appearances alongside Congress leadership have heightened speculation regarding his possible return.

At the event in Narmada, Vaghela also expressed support for the creation of a separate region named Bhilistan for tribal communities, reinforcing the need for increased political mobilisation among these groups. “We support the demand for Bhilistan. I fully endorse the creation of a separate Bhilistan for the tribal community,” he stated. As discussions regarding his relationship with Congress unfold, Vaghela’s controversial comments are likely to sustain his prominence in Gujarat’s political landscape.
