Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Invites Mamata Banerjee to Merge TMC with Congress

The CSR Journal Magazine

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a senior member of the Congress party, has called on Mamata Banerjee, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), to merge her party with Congress. This invitation reflects Chowdhury’s vision to reshape the political atmosphere in West Bengal. He made this suggestion during a speech in Murshidabad on October 1, asking Banerjee to unite her remaining lawmakers under the Congress banner.

In his address, Chowdhury articulated that instead of pursuing intricate political strategies, Banerjee should consider a straightforward integration into the Congress. He stated, “If she joins the Congress and becomes a leader within the party, we would be willing to fight alongside her, following her lead.” This proposition emphasises Chowdhury’s willingness to work collaboratively under her leadership if she decides to undergo this political shift.

This plea for a merger carries significant historical implications. Notably, Mamata Banerjee had originally broken away from Congress in 1998 to establish the TMC. Chowdhury’s proposal encourages a realignment that would see Banerjee return to her political roots nearly three decades later.

Mamata Banerjee Responds with Election Concerns

Following Chowdhury’s remarks, Mamata Banerjee has voiced serious allegations regarding the integrity of the recent West Bengal Assembly elections. During a press conference on the same day, she accused the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, of bias and alleged that voting technology was compromised. Banerjee has demanded the preservation of CCTV footage from all polling stations for transparency.

Banerjee expressed her belief that electronic voting machines (EVMs) were hacked during the election, which the TMC lost, leading to an important power shift in the state. “A storm is coming; the people will give them a fitting reply,” she asserted, highlighting that her party faced electoral violence and other manipulations during the polling process.

Further addressing her grievances, Banerjee referred to the actions taken by the central government forces, which she claimed obstructed fair electoral practices. She announced that the TMC had approached the Supreme Court regarding these issues, underlining her party’s commitment to seeking justice in the wake of the electoral fallout.

TMC’s Stance on Election Integrity and Future Actions

In the wake of allegations regarding the election process, Banerjee pointed out the challenges posed by the SIR (Special Identification Register) procedure in West Bengal. She claimed that it adversely affected eligible voters, stating that the enforcement of these measures was intended to favour the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Her comments pointed to systemic issues within the electoral framework that she believes require immediate redressal.

Banerjee also addressed a recent incident involving the destruction of EVMs in a government facility in Kolkata, linking it to broader concerns about election security. She indicated that a Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe this incident, which she views as critical to understanding the integrity of the electoral system.

In her concluding remarks, the TMC chief condemned the current political situation as a “mockery of democracy”, expressing her dissatisfaction with the treatment of her party and supporters throughout the election process. As Banerjee continues to rally her base, she focuses on exposing perceived irregularities and asserting the rights of voters while navigating a challenging political landscape in West Bengal.
