Delhi and adjoining areas of the National Capital Region are likely to receive more rain on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department issuing an orange alert for the capital. The forecast comes a day after intense showers caused widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion and major disruptions to flight operations.

Delhi remained heavily clouded on Tuesday morning, with moderate rain expected at many places and heavy showers likely at isolated locations. The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, while Gurugram and Faridabad have been placed under a yellow alert.

Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Forecast In Delhi

According to the latest IMD update issued on Tuesday morning, moderate rainfall is likely across several parts of Delhi, while isolated areas could receive heavy rain.

Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected over the national capital as the spell of intense monsoon activity continues.

Gurugram and Faridabad are also expected to receive more rain and remain under a yellow alert. Noida was heavily clouded on Tuesday morning, although the IMD had not issued a specific weather warning for the city.

Flights Hit After Monday’s Downpour

Weather conditions continued to affect flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Airline tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that 15 flights had been cancelled and 88 delayed on Tuesday morning.

Airport authorities had not issued an official statement on the impact of the weather on flight operations at the time of reporting.

The disruption followed a particularly difficult day for air travel on Monday, when 26 flights were cancelled, 15 diverted to other cities and more than 390 delayed amid heavy rainfall.

Delhi-NCR Saw Severe Waterlogging On Monday

Monday’s intense showers brought several parts of Delhi-NCR to a standstill, with waterlogging reported along major roads and low-lying stretches. Long traffic jams left commuters stranded for extended periods.

Delhi, Gurugram and Noida were among the areas affected as accumulated rainwater disrupted road movement and daily commuting.

The latest spell of rainfall has also pushed Delhi’s cumulative rainfall above normal at several observatories.

Delhi Rainfall Above Normal At Several Stations

Till August 24, Safdarjung had recorded 246.2 mm of rainfall against a normal of 191.1 mm, an excess of 29 per cent.

Palam received 227.2 mm, which was 28 per cent above normal, while Lodi Road recorded 233.2 mm, an excess of 22 per cent.

Ridge recorded 243 mm of rainfall, 50 per cent above normal, while Ayanagar received 266.3 mm, which was 66 per cent above its normal rainfall.

Western Disturbance Behind Intense Showers

The IMD attributed the intense rainfall to the interaction of a middle- and upper-level western disturbance with a lower-tropospheric trough.

The trough extends from a low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal towards southwest Uttar Pradesh, creating conditions favourable for the current spell of heavy rainfall over Delhi and surrounding areas.

With more rain forecast on Tuesday, authorities and commuters are likely to remain on alert for further waterlogging, traffic disruption and possible impacts on flight operations.
