Delhi Police Seizes 610 Illegal LPG Cylinders in Mundka amid Nationwide Shortage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Police Crime Branch has dismantled an illegal hoarding operation involving liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders in the Mundka area of New Delhi. This operation led to the confiscation of 610 LPG cylinders from various suppliers, including Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas. The crackdown comes as the nation faces an LPG supply shortage, reportedly influenced by disruptions in global energy supplies due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia.

Government Addresses LPG Supply Concerns

Despite the perceived shortage, the Indian government has confirmed that LPG supplies have not run dry at any distribution points nationwide. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, emphasized during an inter-ministerial briefing that crude oil is available in adequate quantities, and all refineries are functioning at full capacity. She reiterated that petrol stations continue to operate normally and that there have been no reports of supply shortages in any regions. Additionally, 100 percent supply of piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport users is actively being maintained.

Focus on Consumer Interests and Encouragement for PNG Use

The government remains committed to prioritizing the needs of domestic consumers regarding LPG. Measures are being implemented to ensure a steady supply, particularly for households and sectors deemed essential. Authorities have also advised LPG consumers to consider transitioning to PNG connections wherever feasible. In an effort to facilitate this transition, several gas companies have introduced incentives aimed at attracting new PNG clients.

Increased Crackdowns on Hoarding and Black-Marketing

The rise in illegal hoarding and black-marketing of LPG cylinders has prompted a series of law enforcement operations across India. Just a day prior, the Bhaderwah Police successfully conducted a similar operation, recovering 75 LPG cylinders and arresting three individuals engaged in the illegal sale of these cylinders. Acted upon specific intelligence, the operation was initiated under the direction of SSP Doda Sandeep Mehta, with police raiding locations suspected of harboring illegal transactions.

Details of Bhaderwah Operation

During the Bhaderwah operation, officers apprehended three suspects, identifying them as key players in the illegal trade. They seized eight filled LPG cylinders and 15 empty ones from the possession of one individual, while another was found with 28 filled and 24 empty cylinders. The total recovery of 75 cylinders illustrates the scale of illegal activities the police are working to combat.
