Delhi HC Rejects Plea Seeking Live-Streaming of Court Hearings

The Delhi High Court recently observed that the quality, confidentiality and security of the judicial process could be undermined if court proceedings are live streamed. There can also be potential misuse of such crucial clips by content creators. The court stated so while rejecting a petition that sought the retention of live streaming proceedings.

What Court Said

“It has also been rightly noted that imposing rigid timelines without regard to technical challenges and resource allocation would not be prudent….. issuance of any omnibus directions (as sought by the petitioner), regardless of technical issues and safeguards that are required to be put in place, could have unintended consequences, potentially undermining the quality confidentiality and security of judicial processes,” said justice Sachin Dutta in a Delhi High Court order dated March 28th.
The court also observed that it is necessary to ensure that practical assessments are made and safeguards are introduced through technical committees of the court before issuing orders for recording and archiving court proceedings.
