Eight Workers Electrocuted in Jhunjhunu Tragedy

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, where eight labourers lost their lives due to electrocution on Monday, November 2. The incident took place in Chhapoli village while the workers were engaged in road construction activities. Reports indicate that an 11,000-volt power line made contact with a gravel-mixing machine, leading to the electrification of the equipment and subsequently causing electric shocks to the labourers nearby.

During the road construction work, the gravel-mixing machine inadvertently touched the high-tension power line overhead. This resulted in a severe electrical current passing through the machine, affecting the workers who were in close proximity. Local police have confirmed the details surrounding the incident, highlighting the dangers associated with construction work near high-voltage lines.

The situation has raised concerns regarding safety protocols and the need for stringent measures to prevent such accidents in the future. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the workers were unaware of the imminent danger posed by the overhead power line, which ultimately led to this devastating outcome.

Government Response

In the wake of this tragedy, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the untimely deaths of the workers. He has directed relevant officials to ensure that proper medical treatment is provided to the injured and that immediate assistance is extended to the affected families. The Chief Minister also called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sharma stated, “The news of the untimely death of workers due to electrocution in the incident at Jhunjhunu is deeply saddening. I pray to God to grant a place at His feet to the departed souls and to provide strength to the bereaved families.” His comments reflect a commitment to addressing the needs of the victims’ families and ensuring accountability.

Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also conveyed his condolences, emphasising the need for a comprehensive investigation to ascertain how such a tragic event could occur during road construction. He highlighted the importance of determining responsibility for the incident and ensuring that the families of the deceased receive appropriate compensation and support.

Financial Assistance Announced

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has also expressed condolences and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased workers. Each family will receive an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Additionally, individuals who sustained injuries in the incident will be provided with Rs 50,000 each to aid in their recovery.

This financial support is intended to alleviate some of the immediate burdens faced by the families during this difficult time. The announcement has been welcomed by local leaders and community members, who are calling for further measures to enhance safety in construction zones to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that proper safety standards are enforced in construction activities, particularly those occurring near high-voltage power lines. The community is mourning the loss of the workers while seeking justice and accountability for the incident that has profoundly impacted their lives.
