Delhi Government Extends Ayushman Bharat Cover to Widow and Disability Aid Beneficiaries

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has announced that beneficiaries of the widow and disability financial assistance programs will now be incorporated into the Ayushman Bharat health scheme. During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, it was resolved to extend the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) to an estimated 3.97 lakh widows and 1.31 lakh Divyang individuals. This significant move also allows their family members to benefit from the scheme.

Currently, around 5.5 lakh families in Delhi are part of the Ayushman Bharat initiative, as stated by Gupta. With this latest decision, an additional 5.5 lakh families will gain enhanced health security. This expanded coverage will supplement those already receiving assistance under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Household (PRS) categories, as well as senior citizens over the age of 70, Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers, and Anganwadi workers and helpers.

The government is committed to ensuring that no low-income, vulnerable, or needy individual in Delhi is denied medical care due to financial barriers. Ayushman Bharat stands as the largest health protection program in the country, and the Delhi government’s decision is aimed at increasing its accessibility and effectiveness.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the goal remains clear: to guarantee that every eligible citizen has access to quality and affordable healthcare services. To date, a total of 7,23,707 Ayushman cards have been issued in Delhi, including 2,74,620 cards allocated to senior citizens.

In order to implement the scheme effectively within the capital, the government has empanelled a network of 208 hospitals, which consists of 156 private institutions and 53 government-run facilities. Since the initiation of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana in Delhi, over 29,120 beneficiaries have received medical treatment through the State Health Agency.

Gupta stated that this initiative transcends mere administrative action; it represents a commitment to the health and dignity of every disadvantaged family within Delhi. The expansion of the scheme is set to significantly bolster the healthcare system, ensuring that those in need can access vital medical services without financial strain.
