Delhi Crime Branch Dismantles Interstate Anti-Cancer Drug Racket, Seizing Medicines Worth Rs 9 Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Inter-State Cell of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has successfully dismantled an interstate network allegedly involved in the illegal trade of counterfeit and misappropriated anti-cancer medicines. The operation, conducted on August 20, led to the arrest of seventeen individuals and the seizure of products valued at approximately Rs 9 crore, according to police officials.

Among those detained are individuals identified as Abhishek Vaishya, Shubham Kumar Chaudhary, Suraj Chaudhary, and several others with ties to various hospitals and as medicine traders. Reports suggest that the group was engaged in the illegal diversion and distribution of crucial medications, including high-value anti-cancer drugs.

Officials indicated that the operation involved a coordinated effort across regions, specifically targeting areas in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and other states such as Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. This extensive investigation underscores the nationwide scope of the alleged syndicate.

Details of the Operation and Seizures

During the raids, police recovered a total of 588 filled anti-cancer vials alongside other medicinal products, amounting to thousands of units. In addition, approximately Rs 50 lakh in cash was discovered, along with electronic devices and documentation that may assist in the ongoing investigation.

Significant contributions to the recoveries were made during searches of the residences of key suspects, notably Anand Kumar, where 337 vials were found, and Deepak, known as Ravi, who had 108 vials and Rs 6.5 lakh at his home. These findings reveal the extensive nature of the network’s operations and its deep connections within the medicine supply chain.

Police initiated these actions following specific intelligence received on June 22 regarding the syndicate’s activities. Verification efforts pointed to numerous locations in East Delhi and Navi Mumbai, facilitating a well-coordinated raid on July 11 conducted by seven teams from the Inter-State Cell.

Insights into the Syndicate’s Operations

According to authorities, the accused reportedly accessed high-value anti-cancer medicines through multiple illicit channels. These included counterfeit medications from unverified sources, drugs misappropriated from health facilities, and products diverted from government institutions. This unlawful procurement process was noted for lacking valid invoices, drug licences, or any regulatory documentation.

Investigators discovered that the syndicate utilised residential locations for storage before distributing these drugs through a network of intermediaries. Repackaging processes involved the use of original cartons and materials that had previously been used, sometimes altering identifying features by employing chemicals like acetone.

Furthermore, investigators noted the presence of multiple supplies and tools used for packaging, including thermocol boxes and adhesive materials. Records indicating transactions and cash flow have been retrieved, contributing to the complexity of the investigation.

As the inquiry progresses, law enforcement is keen on tracing the entire distribution network and identifying additional beneficiaries, with the potential for more arrests and recoveries in the near future. The gravity of the situation highlights the ongoing challenge of counterfeit medicines in the healthcare sector.
