Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Launches 200 E-Buses and Revives Ladies Special Services

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu inaugurated 200 electric buses, marking a significant expansion of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet to nearly 6,800 vehicles. This initiative aims to enhance public transportation options in the capital while promoting environmentally friendly travel solutions. The addition of these buses is part of the larger strategy to improve the city’s transport infrastructure and reduce its carbon footprint.

Focus on Women’s Safety and Accessibility

Among the newly introduced buses, 56 are designated as Ladies Special services, intended for university areas and routes with substantial demand from female passengers. This service aims to enhance safety and accessibility for women commuters in Delhi. CM Gupta noted that these dedicated services are crucial, particularly during her time as a student when such provisions were in place. For nearly 28 years, the absence of dedicated transport for women had been a significant gap that this initiative seeks to fill.

The DTC has outlined a plan to operate 30 Ladies Special trips across 15 routes experiencing high demand, along with 26 University Ladies Special trips covering 13 routes. This move underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring safer travel options for women, amidst ongoing concerns about public safety in urban transport.

Lieutenant Governor Sandhu emphasised that the Ladies Special buses represent more than just a transport solution; they are aimed at providing a secure means of mobility for women in the city. This focus on enhancing public safety aligns with broader efforts to empower women in urban settings.

Expansion of Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

As part of the same event, CM Gupta inaugurated a public electric vehicle (EV) charging station at Rajghat Depot-I. Additionally, five fully electric and air-conditioned inter-state buses were introduced for the Delhi-Karnal route, which will feature ten daily trips in both directions along a distance of approximately 133 kilometres. This initiative not only boosts local transport but also facilitates smoother travel for inter-state commuters.

With the latest fleet addition, Delhi’s total count includes 4,938 electric buses and 1,750 CNG buses. Gupta highlighted that Delhi now has the highest number of electric buses in the country. This achievement reflects the city’s proactive approach towards adopting clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

In conjunction with the expansion of infrastructural facilities, Gupta noted that the government is working to enhance EV charging infrastructure while also providing financial subsidies under the EV policy. This comprehensive strategy demonstrates a commitment to promoting electric mobility and ensuring that citizens have access to critical resources as they transition to more sustainable modes of transport.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

The initiatives launched on Wednesday are a part of Delhi’s broader strategy to modernise public transport while addressing pressing social issues, such as women’s safety. The introduction of Ladies Special buses alongside the expanded fleet of electric buses illustrates a multifaceted approach to urban mobility. As these programmes progress, they are expected to significantly impact commuter experience and environmental sustainability in the capital.

These developments signal a pivotal moment for transport in Delhi, highlighting the government’s focus on innovation in public services. By prioritising both safety and sustainability, the city aims to set a benchmark for urban transport solutions in India.
