Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the need for women’s safety and empowerment during her address to students at the ‘Parampara Se Pragati’ programme at Maitreyi College on September 30. She stated that strict measures would be implemented against individuals involved in wrongdoing. Noting the tendency of women to prioritise family over personal aspirations, Gupta encouraged girls to focus on their own growth and interests.

While reflecting on her own experiences, the Chief Minister shared that she never envisioned herself in such a prominent role. “When I was a student like you, I never thought that I would become the Chief Minister and speak to you,” she remarked, emphasising how personal growth can lead to greater opportunities.

Gupta underscored the vital role that women play in the nation’s advancement. She reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s belief that progress is only possible when women and girls are allowed to flourish and contribute fully.

Collective Responsibility for Safety

During her talk, the Chief Minister addressed recent incidents concerning women’s safety in Delhi, asserting that it is the responsibility of the entire society to create a secure environment. She pointed out that often families impose restrictions only on girls following safety incidents without addressing the need for accountability among boys as well. Gupta firmly stated, “When restrictions are needed, boys should also be taught.” This approach aims to foster a more balanced responsibility for safety among genders.

She stressed the importance of gender sensitisation, urging boys to learn about respect and consent. “Everyone should understand their dos and don’ts,” she added, highlighting that boys need to comprehend that ‘NO’ signifies a clear boundary that must be respected. This educational emphasis aims to cultivate a culture of mutual respect and understanding.

In calling for a shared responsibility for ensuring safety, Gupta reminded the audience that rights come with corresponding duties. Her statement, “If anyone does anything wrong in this city, they will not be spared,” aimed to underline the seriousness of the issue and the commitment to action against offenders.

Standing in solidarity with women and girls, Chief Minister Gupta reiterated her support by stating, “I stand with every daughter of mine.
