CSR News: Titan Company rejuvenates Gunduperumbedu Lake in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

Chennai, India: As part of its Planet CSR initiative, Titan Company Limited, in partnership with the National Agro Foundation, has successfully rejuvenated the Gunduperumbedu Lake in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu — restoring a crucial water body that had remained neglected for close to 15 years. With Titan’s systematic interventions, the 157-hectare lake has now been transformed into a vital source of water, agriculture, and community resilience.

The rejuvenation included the removal of 1.05 lakh cubic metres of silt, strengthening of bunds, construction of 435 metres of toe wall, and renovation of two sluice gates, a surplus weir, and a check-weir, along with a newly constructed RCC passway bridge. These efforts have restored the lake’s holding capacity with an augmentation of 26 crore litres of water, enabling 3–5 additional months of farming each year, raising the water table by nearly 10 metres, and expanding cultivation by 20% (50–100 acres). Farmers are expected to see a 30–40% increase in income, with the direct impact felt by about 3,000 people in Gunduperumbedu, extending to 27,000 in surrounding villages and nearly 1.2 lakh people indirectly through groundwater recharge and flood mitigation.

This marks the second large-scale intervention by Titan in Tamil Nadu this year. Earlier in 2025, Titan inaugurated the Masaorambhu Stream Restoration Project in Thondamuthur Block, Coimbatore, which is designed to revive the stream with seven check dams, replenishing about 10 crore litres of water and improving groundwater recharge across the rural hilly catchment.

“At Titan, we believe that water rejuvenation is not just about restoring natural resources, but about restoring hope and opportunity. The revival of Gunduperumbedu Lake, much like our earlier work on the Masaorambhu Stream, goes beyond water conservation—it is about empowering villages, securing livelihoods, strengthening resilience, and enabling thriving communities. These projects reaffirm our Planet CSR vision — to create lasting change by placing people and the environment at the heart of progress,” said Ms. Revathi Kant, Chief Design Officer and Executive Vice President, Titan Company Limited.

The revived lake was handover over to the Gunduperumbedu Lake committee on September 18th, by Ms. Revathi Kant (Chief Design Officer, Titan), Mr Vijay Govindarajan (Head of Finance, Titan), Mr. N.E. Sridhar (Chief Sustainability Officer, Titan), amidst the presence of Ms. Kalaiselvi Mohan, IAS (District Collector, Kanchipuram), and Mr. R. Arunmozhi (WRD, Lower Palar Basin) and Mr. S. Swaminathan (Chairman, National Agro Foundation).
