The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) executed a series of enforcement actions at R-Mall, Dhokali, Thane, targeting the use of banned Single-Use Plastic (SUP) items. The drive, led by the Regional Office Thane team, uncovered significant violations at two major outlets: Tata Starbucks Pvt Ltd and McDonald’s.
During the inspection at Tata Starbucks Pvt Ltd, the following banned SUP items were discovered in use: plastic film-coated cups, plastic straws, and plastic dome lids.
None of these items carried the required verifiable QR code, indicating non-compliance with the state’s regulations. The outlet manager refused to pay the penalty for the first offense.
The enforcement team also inspected the McDonald’s outlet at R-Mall, which was found using banned SUP items without the required verifiable QR code. McDonald’s complied by paying the penalty for the first offense. The banned SUP was seized from both outlets and handed over to the Urban Local Body (ULB) for proper disposal.
Siddhesh Ramdas Kadam, Chairperson of MPCB, emphasized the board’s commitment to enforcing the SUP ban and protecting the environment. He stated, “Our actions underscore MPCB’s dedication to upholding the law and ensuring that businesses comply with environmental regulations. The use of banned single-use plastics poses a significant threat to our environment, and we will continue to take stringent measures against violators. Compliance is not optional but a legal and moral obligation.”
MPCB urges all businesses and individuals to adhere to the SUP ban and contribute to a cleaner and greener Maharashtra. The board remains vigilant and will continue its enforcement drives across the state.
