Congress Adapts Campaign Strategy to Engage Gen-Z Ahead of RaGa’s Indore Event

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party is altering its outreach strategy to engage young voters in anticipation of the student convention, ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, led by Rahul Gandhi in Indore on September 19. The party aims to connect with Generation Z by moving away from traditional speeches, formal stages, and elaborate receptions. This change reflects an understanding of the preferences of today’s youth, who reportedly seek a more relaxed and relatable atmosphere in political discourse.

Innovative Outreach Activities

Local Congress workers have notably abandoned traditional attire for casual clothing, opting for jeans and T-shirts as they conduct their campaigns. Instead of meeting in formal halls, campaign efforts have shifted to more informal settings such as cafes, libraries, hostels, and cricket grounds. Indore District Congress Committee president Vipin Wankhede remarked that the younger generation shows little interest in conventional political formalities.

The focus is now on initiating jamming sessions in educational institutions, where students participate in music and singing events rather than enduring lengthy speeches. Wankhede also highlighted that the Congress is organising cricket tournaments to attract attention for ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’. Meetings in libraries and hostels serve to foster community engagement and dialogue among students.

This represents a significant departure from the traditional approach, tapping into the interests and preferences of contemporary youth, who are increasingly selective about their views on leadership and politics. According to Wankhede, young voters today form their opinions based on personal beliefs rather than societal expectations. His observations suggest that they engage with political leaders differently than previous generations, prioritising authenticity and relevance over conventional protocols.

Learning from Recent Protests

Senior journalist Prakash Hindustani expressed that the recent student protests at Jantar Mantar provided critical insights for political parties regarding communication with the younger electorate. He noted that the Congress is attempting to recover lost political ground by enhancing its presence, especially among individuals aged under 30.

Adapting the campaign strategies is seen as essential for reconnecting with this demographic, which may view traditional political engagement as outdated. As part of the outreach, Congress is also addressing issues directly affecting young voters, such as the high cost of education, alleged irregularities in recruitment processes, and unemployment.

He wants to address subjects that resonate strongly with this age group. Rahul Gandhi has been at the forefront of these discussions, having previously launched ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ to create a dialogue platform aimed at highlighting concerns pertinent to the youth.

Encouraging Registration and Participation

As the event approaches, the Congress has reported that nearly two lakh students have registered for the fifth edition of ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ in Indore. This initiative seeks to build momentum and facilitate an open platform for students to voice their opinions on current educational reforms and other pressing issues.

The previous editions of this campaign have taken place in various cities, including Kota, Dehradun, Prayagraj, and Pune, under Gandhi’s leadership. With the Indore event fast approaching, the Congress party is positioning ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ as a pivotal student-centric dialogue opportunity. This fresh approach signifies a broader strategy to reshuffle engagement methods.

It aims not only to increase participation but also to foster meaningful conversations on subjects relevant to today’s youth. Gen-Z, defined as those born between 1997 and 2012, represents a significant portion of the electorate, making their engagement increasingly crucial for political parties in the contemporary landscape. As the Congress continues to reshape its campaign style, it remains focused on appealing to younger audiences through innovative and accessible methods.
