Dharmendra Kashyap Joins Samajwadi Party After BJP Denies Rajya Sabha Ticket

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dharmendra Kumar Kashyap, a former minister and BJP leader, has joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Tuesday, marking a significant turn in his political career. This decision follows his exclusion from the BJP’s list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha, which had raised questions about his future in the party. His move to the SP has been interpreted as a strategic shift, especially with the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching early next year.

Welcome from Samajwadi Party Leadership

Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, welcomed Kashyap into the party during a press conference held in Lucknow. Yadav expressed confidence that Kashyap’s inclusion would enhance the party’s strength ahead of the upcoming elections. Kashyap is recognised as a prominent leader among the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community, particularly in the Rohilkhand region of north-western Uttar Pradesh.

During the press conference, Kashyap voiced his concerns regarding the current BJP government, claiming that citizens in Uttar Pradesh are dissatisfied due to inadequate law and order. He alleged that the government’s actions, particularly those of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, have disproportionately affected the poor, while members of his own caste have not faced similar repercussions.

Kashyap’s departure from the BJP was anticipated after the party announced its candidates for the Rajya Sabha, which included state minister Dharampal Singh and Shruti Gangwar, the daughter of former Union minister Santosh Gangwar. Following this announcement, Kashyap shared a cryptic post on Facebook featuring a sunset, captioned “Tata Bye-Bye,” which further fuelled speculation about his potential return to the SP.

Background on Dharmendra Kashyap

Kashyap has a notable political history, having previously served as a member of the Lok Sabha, representing the Aonla constituency in 2014 and 2019. However, he faced a setback in the 2024 elections, losing the seat by a narrow margin. His political journey began with the Samajwadi Party, from which he transitioned to the BJP in May 2013, a move that has now come full circle with his return to the SP.

His rejoining of the Samajwadi Party is particularly significant given the changing political landscape in Uttar Pradesh. The SP is looking to consolidate its base among OBC voters, and Kashyap’s influence in this community could prove beneficial for the party’s electoral prospects. His experience and established network within the region are expected to play a crucial role in the party’s campaign strategies.

As the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections draw nearer, the dynamics between the BJP and the SP are likely to intensify. Kashyap’s return to the SP could signal a shift in voter sentiment, especially among those who are disillusioned with the current government’s performance. The upcoming months will be critical as both parties prepare for the electoral battle ahead.
