CM Suvendu Adhikari Visits Family of Deceased Girl in Rejinagar Stampede

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited Rejinagar on October 2 to campaign for the upcoming Assembly by-election and showed compassion by meeting the family of a six-year-old girl who passed away in a stampede-like incident at a rally organised by Trinamool Congress (TMC). The incident reportedly occurred during a political gathering for the Democratic TMC candidate in the constituency.

Electoral Context and Candidate Details

The Rejinagar constituency has become a focal point in the political landscape due to the by-election scheduled for October 6. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Sakharav Sarkar to contest from this seat, while Hasirani Rath is the party’s candidate for the Nandigram constituency. This electoral battle is significant, considering that the need for a bypoll arose from the resignation of Humayun Kabir, the founder of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), who previously won the Nowda seat.

In preparation for the by-elections, the BJP released a list detailing prominent leaders advocating for the party’s candidates. The list features state party chief Samik Bhattacharya at the forefront, alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty and state minister Dilip Ghosh are also highlighted as key campaigners.

Samik Bhattacharya has appointed BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato and state minister Gouri Shankar Ghosh as in-charges for the Nandigram and Rejinagar seats, respectively. This strategic positioning is anticipated to bolster the party’s chances in these critical constituencies.

Political Dynamics and Challenges

The upcoming bypolls are set against a backdrop of internal discord within the TMC concerning the use of the party’s name and election symbol. Recently, the Election Commission has issued an interim ruling that restricts both factions of the TMC from using its name or symbol until a resolution is reached regarding the ongoing dispute.

The TMC has announced Sanchita Pradhan (Dey) as its candidate for Nandigram and Rabiul Alam Chowdhury for Rejinagar. Meanwhile, opposition from the Congress party will be represented by Mohd Abdullahil Kafi in Rejinagar and Milan Pradhan in Nandigram. The CPI(M) has put forward Advocate Sayeed Asad Ali for Rejinagar, while the CPI has chosen Shanti Gopal Giri as its candidate in Nandigram.

Polling will take place on October 6, and the counting of votes is scheduled for October 9. The Election Commission stated that the entire election process should be completed by October 11, ensuring a prompt conclusion to this electoral period.
