CM Mamata Banerjee’s big announcement: Migrant workers will get Rs 5000 per month upon returning to West Bengal under ‘Shramshree’ scheme

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a big announcement on Monday about residents of the state working in other Indian states as migrant labourers. The CM announced that the state government will fully support migrant workers working in other states if they return to Bengal under a new scheme called ‘Shramshree’.

The West Bengal government will provide Rs 5,000 per month to the workers’ families until they find work for a year. Addressing a press conference from the State Secretariat Nabanna on Monday, the Chief Minister announced the launch of the ‘Shramshree’ scheme aimed at benefitting migrant workers.

What is ‘Shramshree’ scheme?

CM Mamata Banerjee said that migrant workers will be employed under ‘Shramshree’ scheme. If they return to Bengal and register their names on ‘Shramshree’ portal, they will get state government assistance, the CM announced.

The state government will provide Rs 5,000 per month to the workers’ families until they find work for a year. Along with this, they will be provided with the benefits of the Swasthyasathi (health companion) and Khadyaathi (food companion) schemes and receive training through the ‘Utkarsh Bangla’ project.

Bengali migrant labourers being harassed in BJP-ruled states: Mamata

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lately been alleging that migrant workers from Bengal are facing harassment in other states, especially the ones ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The state’s ruling party, the Trinamool Congress, has taken up several programs in protest.

A few weeks ago, the Chief Minister herself announced that in the interest of protecting the ‘tortured’ migrant workers, the state government would make all arrangements for their rehabilitation when they return. The CM had also talked about launching a separate scheme for migrant labourers.

On Monday, after the cabinet meeting in Nabanna, the Chief Minister revealed details of that project in a press conference. She talked about launching a new project and portal called ‘Shramshree’. If they return to Bengal after leaving work in another state, they will get all government benefits if they register their names on this portal.

What benefits will migrant labourers from West Bengal get upon return?

First of all, all government services including job cards, and benefits under the Swasthyasathi and Khadyaathi schemes will be provided to them. Until the migrant workers get employment in Bengal, the state government will give Rs 5000 every month to their families. This will be for a period of maximum of one year.

In addition, the government will arrange for the children of migrant workers’ families to study in government schools. Workers returning to Bengal will also be able to avail the benefits of other state government schemes.
