The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has officially demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, granting him a 48-hour timeframe to comply. Should he refuse, the CJP plans to initiate protests across various locations in India. This announcement was made during a press conference held in New Delhi on Thursday, following an investigative report by the Indian Express, which highlighted internal disputes among the Election Commissioners.

CJP founder and convenor Abhijeet Dipke stated that the movement would include sit-in demonstrations in New Delhi, as well as in other cities throughout the country. Dipke emphasised that these protests will serve to hold the electoral body accountable and to express public dissent against Kumar’s leadership.

Formal Demands Outlined

During the press conference, CJP co-convenor Saurav Das articulated several specific demands. These include the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, initiation of criminal proceedings against Kumar and those who allegedly directed his decisions, and a halt to all impending state Assembly elections. The CJP claims these measures are necessary to preserve the integrity of the electoral process.

In addition to these demands, the CJP is also calling for the rollback of the Special Electoral Initiative (SIR) to the electoral roll of 2025. Furthermore, they are urging that the associated files regarding the SIR be placed under the supervision of a committee led by the Supreme Court. They are also advocating for the repeal of the existing law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners.

The backdrop to these demands is a recent investigation by the Indian Express, which reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on at least 14 occasions regarding decisions and actions undertaken by the Election Commission. Such disclosures have intensified scrutiny on the operational integrity of the Commission.

Election Commission’s Response

The Election Commission has responded to the allegations and the ensuing turmoil by asserting that differing viewpoints, written observations, and internal checks are a standard aspect of their deliberative process. They maintain that they make decisions collectively, insisting that the decisions taken over the past year, including those related to the SIR, have been unanimous.

This assurance aims to quell any concerns regarding the integrity and functionality of the electoral institution as it prepares for future elections. By insisting on the adherence to established protocols, the Election Commission seeks to reinforce public confidence in its operations at this critical juncture.
