Bright New Comet Set to Shine in India’s Evening Sky

The CSR Journal Magazine

A newly discovered comet, designated as C2026 A1 (MAPS), is attracting significant global interest with the potential to illuminate the evening sky more brightly than Venus. Discovered in January by amateur astronomers in Chile, this comet is part of a particular category known as Kreutz sungrazing comets. Understanding the nature and mechanics of sungrazers can provide insight into their appeal to star enthusiasts.

Defining Sungrazing Comets

Sungrazers are defined as comets that pass perilously close to the Sun during their orbits. Unlike regular comets that may remain millions of kilometers away from the Sun, Kreutz comets venture close enough to experience extreme solar heat. Named after German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, these comets can become brilliantly luminous, often visible even during daylight when the Sun’s heat vaporizes their icy components. However, the intense heat can also lead to their destruction, posing risks during their solar approach.

The Provenance of Sungrazers

Kreutz-family comets originate from a single large cometary nucleus, believed to have been more than 100 kilometers in diameter, that approached the Sun roughly between the 3rd and 4th century BCE. This ancient comet fragmented over time, splitting into two main parts and releasing numerous smaller fragments. Throughout history, these fragments have periodically returned, resulting in some of the most impressive comets observed. For instance, the Great Comet of 1882 achieved brightness a hundred times greater than that of a full Moon and lit up the night sky for several months.

Details on Comet MAPS Discovery

The MAPS program, run by a team of French amateur astronomers, made the discovery of Comet MAPS on January 13, 2026. The program’s name is an acronym derived from the surnames of its members: Maury, Attard, Parrott, and Signoret. At the time it was discovered, this comet was farther from the Sun than any previously identified sungrazer, indicating that it may be relatively large. Comet MAPS is projected to make a close approach to the Sun between April 4 and April 5, 2026.

Viewing Opportunities in India

The Southern Hemisphere is expected to offer the prime viewing conditions for Comet MAPS, with its visibility likely after sunset in the western sky. In India, observers may catch a glimpse of this celestial event, particularly from the southern regions. However, in the Northern Hemisphere, the comet is anticipated to appear low on the southwestern horizon at dusk. The spectacle of Comet MAPS hinges on its ability to endure the intense heat during its solar proximity.
