BMW has introduced the eighth generation of its 3 Series, marking an expansion of the Neue Klasse family. This new model maintains the availability of traditional petrol engines alongside the recent introduction of the electric i3 sedan. Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid variant is expected to be made available in the coming year.

Exterior and Design Features

The updated 3 Series retains its classic three-box sedan silhouette while embracing the design ethos pioneered by BMW’s Neue Klasse. The vehicle showcases a longer wheelbase, reduced overhangs, and flush-fitting door handles, contributing to a more robust appearance. The front design merges the kidney grille and twin headlamp features into an integrated unit, enhancing its modern aesthetic.

The design similarities between the 3 Series and the i3 are notable, particularly in their external appearance. Key differences mostly emerge from details that relate to the engines used. Owners of petrol variants have the option to select wheel sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches, while the i3 offers larger wheel options between 19 and 21 inches. The M350 xDrive variant comes with distinctive M-specific elements, which include uniquely designed yellow lighting accents.

In the interior, BMW has applied its latest Panoramic iDrive technology to create a cutting-edge driving experience. Features include a unified display that combines the BMW Panoramic Vision and an optional 3D head-up display, alongside a central touchscreen measuring 17.9 inches and a newly designed multifunction steering wheel. Many interior options, such as electric front seats with memory functionality, multifunction and M Sport seats, rear seat heating, and premium audio systems from Harman Kardon, are also available.

Performance and Electric Variant Specifications

The BMW i3, the electric variant of the series, is equipped with the latest eDrive technology that includes an 800V electrical architecture. It features cylindrical battery cells and new electric motors along with bidirectional charging capability. At launch, two versions will be offered. The i3 50 xDrive generates 469bhp and 645Nm of torque using a 108.7kWh battery, with a claimed WLTP range of 912km. Fast charging can replenish up to 423km of range within just 10 minutes. The i3 40 xDrive, featuring a smaller 82.8kWh battery, produces 374bhp and boasts a range of 710km.

In 2027, an additional model known as the i3 M60 xDrive M Performance will be introduced, expanding the electric offerings further.

On the internal combustion side, the M350 xDrive leads the range with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine combined with a 48V mild-hybrid system. This setup results in a power output of 443hp and 580 N · m of torque. The powertrain operates through BMW’s xDrive system and an automatic transmission, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 4.1 seconds. The top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h and includes standard adaptive M suspension.

Advanced Technology and Production Information

The new 3 Series is equipped with a variety of upgraded driver assistance technologies, featuring SAE Level 2 functionality. Notably, BMW’s Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h across 21 countries. Additional urban-driving automation features are slated for introduction in 2027.

Manufacturing of the electric i3 is set to occur at BMW’s facility in Munich, whereas the combustion-engine variants will be produced in Dingolfing. The new generation of the 3 Series is anticipated to enter international markets starting in 2027, showcasing BMW’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in vehicle production.
