Bengal Athlete Swapna Barman Faces Inquiry Ahead of Political Debut

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways has initiated an inquiry into Swapna Barman, a medal-winning athlete from the Asian Games, for purportedly breaching service regulations by joining a political party. Barman, a candidate for the Trinamool Congress in the Rajganj Assembly constituency in Jalpaiguri district, is set to compete in the upcoming elections. The voting is scheduled for April 23, with the results to be declared on May 4.

Legal Action Following Resignation Delay

This development comes on the heels of a petition Barman filed in the Calcutta High Court regarding her resignation from Indian Railways. In her legal submission, she claims to have handed in her resignation on March 16, while accusing her employer of unnecessarily delaying its processing.

Political Entry and Aspirations

Barman, a member of the Rajbongshi community in North Bengal, officially joined the Trinamool Congress on February 27. Her induction was attended by notable figures, including Siliguri Mayor Goutam Deb and state ministers Bratya Basu and Chandrima Bhattacharya. During her entry into the party, Barman expressed admiration for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, highlighting her inspirational journey from grassroots activism to substantial political leadership.

Background and Athletic Achievements

Barman was born in Jalpaiguri district and grew up in a financially constrained environment. From a young age, she pursued sports as a means to secure employment for her family. Despite being born with a unique condition of having six toes on each foot, which complicated her access to appropriate athletic footwear, she rigorously dedicated herself to training. Barman gained prominence by winning gold medals at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championship and the Patiala Federation Cup. She made history in 2018 by becoming India’s first heptathlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. In recognition of her contributions and performances in athletics, she was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2019.

Advocacy for Athletic Development

Through her achievements, Barman has emerged as a vocal advocate for enhanced infrastructure to nurture and develop athletic talent in India. Her focus remains on leveraging her platform to improve conditions for aspiring athletes in the country.
