The Jaldhaka River delivered a devastating blow to the Moynaguri block last week when a crucial embankment failed, sending a catastrophic surge of muddy water across agricultural lands, livestock shelters, and homes. The resultant devastation has left numerous settlements, most notably Bedgarah, resembling a war-zone.
Overnight Catastrophe and Mass Displacement
The few hours of intense flooding completely upended life in Bedgarah and surrounding areas last week. The water’s violent force either submerged or entirely swept away homes, leading to the confirmed loss of numerous livestock. For the predominantly agricultural community, the disaster has been total, leaving most families financially ruined.

Physical evidence of the destruction is widespread: twisted metal roofing, collapsed walls, and empty foundations where houses once stood. In the Bedgarah Khaturbari area alone, at least 50 homes were completely wiped out. The neighboring Bedgarah Tarabari suffered a similar fate, with an estimated 70 to 80 houses damaged.
With their homes destroyed, countless residents have been forced to seek refuge, with many currently sheltering along the railway tracks near the Bedgarah Railway Station. Preliminary assessments by the administration indicate that roughly one thousand homes across the entire Moynaguri block have sustained damage.
