Two Suspects Arrested in Delhi Bus Gang-Rape Case Involving Teenager

Authorities have apprehended two individuals in relation to a distressing incident in which a 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh has claimed she was gang-raped while aboard a moving sleeper bus, according to the Delhi Police.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for the North District, Niharika Bhatt, reported that the victim approached the Kashmiri Gate police station on the night of August 4. She alleged that she had been assaulted whilst travelling from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, to a relative’s residence in Sector 63, Noida. The victim stated that she boarded the bus after being stranded due to heavy rainfall.

“During the inquiry, it was determined that she was en route from Mainpuri to Sector 63 in Noida. The alleged incident occurred between Pari Chowk in Greater Noida and Sector 63, Noida,” Bhatt informed ANI.

Following the reported assault, the victims claimed that the bus driver and conductor left her on the Ring Road, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kashmiri Gate police station, away from the actual location of the incident.

In response to the gravity of the situation and in compliance with recent criminal legislation, the police at Kashmiri Gate promptly arranged for the victim’s medical examination while also registering a case. The DCP noted, “We did not let jurisdictional complications impede our duty.”

Utilising CCTV footage, law enforcement officials managed to trace the bus, leading to the swift arrest of both suspects within a few hours. The teenager was subsequently presented to the Child Welfare Committee, and in accordance with their guidance, she was returned to her father.

The investigation is currently ongoing as authorities seek to gather further details related to the case.

Amidst the developments, Atishi, the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), expressed her discontent with the current governance, specifically targeting the BJP. She claimed that while the government is quick to take stringent actions regarding cases that reflect unfavourably on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it has exhibited a failure to effectively prevent violence against women and children.

“The UP Police, Delhi Police, UP government, and the Delhi government are all under the BJP,” Atishi stated. “The Lieutenant Governor represents the BJP, the Ministry of Home Affairs is governed by the BJP, and the Prime Minister also belongs to the BJP. Is there any institution left that the BJP does not oversee?”

She further emphasised her dissatisfaction by contrasting the government’s efforts in tracking down a 15-year-old girl who had reportedly insulted Modi in a video to their inability to prevent sexual assaults and violence against young women. “The BJP is capable of mobilising its full resources against individuals who insult the Prime Minister, yet it appears unable to protect our daughters and children from such heinous acts,” Atishi added.

As investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victim and addressing the broader issues surrounding women’s safety in the region. The Delhi Police are committed to diligently pursuing all leads and bringing the case to a resolution.
