Bangladesh To Send PM’s Defence Adviser To BIMSTEC NSA Meeting In New Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser of Bangladesh, Brigadier General (Retd) AKM Shamsul Islam, is set to represent the country at the BIMSTEC National Security Advisers (NSA) meeting in New Delhi on July 16. This decision has been reportedly communicated to the Indian government through diplomatic channels. The meeting will play a pivotal role in advancing discussions on security cooperation among member nations.

Significance of the Meeting for Bilateral Relations

Bangladesh’s attendance at the NSA meeting is seen as crucial for the future of India-Bangladesh relations. According to reports, how India manages this visit will be an essential factor influencing future high-level exchanges and official engagements between the two countries. The meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance regional security and cooperation.

BIMSTEC stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, comprising seven nations with a combined population of 1.73 billion and a gross domestic product of approximately USD 5.2 trillion. Bangladesh currently holds the chairmanship of BIMSTEC, and its secretariat is based in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

As India and Bangladesh strengthen their ties, the resumption of Indian tourist visa operations in Bangladesh after a two-year break is a notable development. India has plans to further enhance its visa operations, fostering closer interactions between the two nations.

Historical Context of BIMSTEC

BIMSTEC was established on June 6, 1997, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration. Originally referred to as BIST-EC (Bangladesh-India-Sri Lanka-Thailand Economic Cooperation), the organisation has since included Myanmar, Bhutan, and Nepal, broadening its cooperative framework. This evolution reflects a commitment to fostering regional collaboration in various sectors.

The initial signing in Bangkok brought together representatives from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, focusing on economic cooperation. The organisation’s development has progressed steadily over the years, leading to the establishment of the BIMSTEC Secretariat in Dhaka in 2014, which aims to reinforce cooperation among member states.

In addition, an initiative aimed at empowering youth in the region was undertaken by India earlier this year. From April 25 to 30, a week-long BIMSTEC Youth Leadership Exchange Programme was hosted, attracting over 70 emerging leaders from the Bay of Bengal region. This programme aligns with India’s commitment to fostering sustainable regional cooperation.

Commitment to Youth Empowerment

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India highlighted this exchange programme as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to promote youth exchanges across the Bay of Bengal region. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Art of Living organisation and took place in Bangalore and Bhubaneswar.

According to the MEA, the programme aims to develop future-ready leaders through an approach that combines inner well-being with essential leadership skills, systems thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and community engagement. This aligns with India’s broader objective of enhancing collaboration and cooperation in its neighbourhood.

Overall, the upcoming NSA meeting and related initiatives signal a positive trajectory in regional cooperation and the strengthening of ties between Bangladesh and India. Both nations appear committed to fostering a collective approach to security and development in the region.
