Bangladesh Begins Fuel Loading at Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Ahead of Power Boost Plans

The CSR Journal Magazine

The commencement of fuel loading at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi Upazila, Bangladesh, signals an important advancement in the commissioning of this facility. This initiative began on April 28, 2023, and is a crucial step in the nuclear power generation process within the nation.

Phased under the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Bangladesh aims to ensure that all necessary protocols are adhered to during the commissioning. The operations involved have been meticulously planned to comply with international safety standards.

Projected Impact on National Energy Grid

It is anticipated that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will contribute at least 300 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh’s national grid by August 2023. This development is expected to enhance the country’s energy capabilities significantly, making Bangladesh the third nation in South Asia to generate nuclear power, following India and Pakistan.

The construction of this nuclear power plant is supported by substantial financial and technical assistance from Russia, with the overall value of the project exceeding $12 billion. The energy generation will be implemented in various phases as the project progresses.

Once operational, the plant will have a total installed capacity of 2,400 megawatts, strategically situated on the banks of the Padma River. This location is advantageous for both construction and operational efficiency.

Government’s Commitment to Energy Security

As Bangladesh faces an ongoing energy crisis, the introduction of nuclear power is a vital move towards meeting increasing energy demands. Officials have stated that at least one unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to supply electricity to the grid this year, as part of the government’s efforts to bolster energy security and ensure a consistent power supply.

On April 16, 2023, significant progress was acknowledged when Mahmudul Hasan, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA), officially handed over the commissioning licence for Unit 1 to M Moinul Islam, Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. This act underscores the regulatory support behind the project and enhances its credibility.

The inaugural ceremonies for fuel loading activities in Unit 1 are slated for the last week of April 2023. Following this phase, it is projected that electricity generation will begin to be integrated into the national grid approximately three months after fuel loading commences, with full-capacity transmission aimed for December 2023, pending successful testing and enhancements.
